The Dubach Inn

Please note: The Dubach Inn is under new ownership as of October 2007.

Our intent was to spend the 4th of July in Hannibal, experience an old-fashioned American holiday in an old-fashioned American town, and not have to walk too far to do it. We found the Dubach Inn on the Internet. It seemed to fit our needs, if a bit expensive. The website listed rates of $165 for the night of July 3 (a Saturday) and $125 for the night of July 4 (a Sunday). I'm guessing the cheaper rate for Sunday was due to it not being a "weekend" night. No mention was made of a higher rate for a holiday night. We also made our reservation for the top-floor suite (the Fette Suite), one of only two suites available, which had an outside deck.

We arrived toward the end of a long driving trip - day no. 12 I think and didn't push the fact that we were given the ground-floor accommodations (the Dubach Suite). It was comfortable enough, even if somewhat cave-like in the bedroom area (the suite included a bedroom and a large sitting room/kitchen).

The Inn was only a few blocks from "downtown" Hannibal and all of its attractions. The 4th of July is a lot of fun in Hannibal with a fair, the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher look-alike contest, a BIG street parade, a whitewash fence-painting contest, mud volleyball… you name it, and GREAT fireworks over the Mississippi!!!

The Inn was okay but a little rundown, as were all of the buildings in the area. Breakfast was okay, even if some items seemed to have come from the frozen-food aisle of the grocery store. After getting home and reevaluating our stay, I wrote a letter to the owner voicing my concerns over the changed room and changed rate - nothing nasty, just a firm letter requesting a refund for the overcharge. No reply. It goes to show what they think of their clientele, doesn't it? I had no proof to dispute the credit-card charge, as by that time, the website no longer showed a rate for July 4th, so I am $40 wiser now. By all means experience Hannibal on the 4th of July, but try to find a more reputable place than the Dubach Inn.
