Best Things About the Resort:
I expected it to be crowded and noisy. Though it was pretty full, it wasn't noisy. The campers were all very considerate of each other.
Resort Experience:
Mather Campground is conveniently located within Grand Canyon Village. The sites were large and flat with plenty of cover. There are pay showers that had plenty of hot water and an attendant available to make change.
The most important thing here is that you're right at the canyon, so you don't need to deal with the traffic jam just to get into the park each day.
In spite of the crowds of people, we still encountered deer roaming through our site just as we were setting up camp. This is not backcountry camping, but I didn't expect that.
There were lectures and various programs running in the campground. The downside was that it was difficult to find the locations where you needed to go. If we'd had more time there, we probably would have been able to get oriented during the day, but we were short on time and seemed to be trying to find our way to odd locations in the dark for the first time. We never did make our way there.
That's another point: it is VERY DARK at the canyon once the sun goes down. Make sure you don't wander off near dusk without a flashlight. Once you're off the main entry road, it's easy to get disoriented in the dark.
You can't beat the price for such a great location!
