Fortress Cliff

Best Things Nearby:
There are many trails to walk, ride bikes on, and even ride horses. The canyon is pretty much at your discretion. You can do a little hiking up some smaller formations and find little caves in the canyon. There is a stream running through part of the park, which provided a nice cool area to hike by.

Best Things About the Resort:
The campground is small, which makes trails and sightseeing accessible if you don't have a lot of time or are planning on staying for a day or overnight. I happened to be there when there was a stargazing nights with telescopes provided. This was the best part of the camping trip!!

Resort Experience:
The sites were old, but it's camping. You're supposed to rough it. There was a covered picnic table, fire ring, and a cleared space for a tent. The tent site was somewhat sandy, but probably from much use. My particular site was very private, which is nice when you're sleeping outside! Overall, the site was decent, although I'm sure there are nicer camping sites at other parks. Because the terrain was a little more desert-like due to being in a dryer part of the state, the camping site seemed very rugged, but it was manageable!

We camped on the side of a beautiful hill in Ambleside. I am not one of the world's big campers, but I actually felt sorry for people who were stuck inside overnight. We travelled in early September, still a popular time. The campgrounds we looked at that were close to the center of the village were very crowded and had a lot of people in caravans. We really had to look away from the village in order to find a quieter place, dominated by tent-dwellers. But we found the perfect place, just a few hundred feet from an isolated pub so we could easily get meals without having to crank up our travel burner. Sleeping out in the mountain air was incredibly invigorating. It rained every night but by morning it was fresh and clear.
