Rebecca and I were both suffering from salmonella when we arrived in town - and you do really suffer from it! We needed a little luxury, and a break from the summer Indian heat, so we booked into a hotel where our room had air-con and its own, clean bathroom where the water and shower worked. This place did everything we asked of it, other than provide an instant health cure. In addition, the place was built around a lovely courtyard, with a grassy garden, where we could sit and recover. The laundry service here was impressive, too – we gave them all our clothes to wash, and got them back clean and ironed within 24 hours, for about £3.50. We met an American electrical engineer who had emigrated to the US with his parents as a child, and was now in town to rebuild a power station (and from the frequent power cuts, not before time.) This hotel was about the only good thing he had to say about Varanasi, from a workplace point of view, at least! I recommend the place, and it's great value for money.
There is a cafe / restaurant on site, but being sick we didn't trouble it overly. People we spoke to at the hotel seemed to think it was pretty good.
