Leave the alarm clocks at home because you won't need them, or likely want one. Let the roosters provide the service at Mt. Victory, an undiscovered jackpot of opportunities and experiences for the ecologically-minded traveler. Still in the early stages of development, the compound is atop Mt. Victory Hill located in the northwestern portion of the island, and engulfed by some of the most historical treasures and natural beauties you'll find on St. Croix.
There are currently four rental units of tent-like structures built on 18 x 18 wooden platforms. Their kitchens come with a cold-water sink, ice chest, and two-burner stove with fuel provided. Aside from patio-type furniture provided within the models, bedding/linen supplies are also furnished. Guests share a common restroom and bathhouse, which have hot water thanks to solar heating.
Three smaller units are each currently priced at $60 per night for double occupancy. The larger, two-story model which can accommodate up to 10 people is priced at $80 per night double occupancy, with an additional charge per person. Special arrangements can be made for renting out the entire facility for groups of up to 20 people. Reservations can be made by calling 340/772-1651 or contacting Bruce Wilson. A new website, Mt. Victory Camp is also in the works.
The solitude and hilltop breezes definitely can refresh one's soul, even for the brief time we passed through, making this the perfect place for those looking to rejuvenate or create. Further inspiration comes from the camp's historical ruins - including a school built in 1841 as part of social reform for educating slave children. Today, these remains house a captive breeding program for the Red Footed Tortoise.
You'll need your own rental transportation and a good map for finding Mt. Victory. The town of Frederiksted is a short-drive for picking up needed supplies. Future plans call for an on-site general store. In the meantime, guests can help themselves to the wide variety of tropical fruits and herbs growing around the facility. I highly recommend the passion fruit!
Sprat Hall Beach is a mile-half away where you'll also find The Sunset Grill restaurant open for lunches 11:30 - 2:30 and dinners 5:30 - 9:30, with Happy Hour 4:00 - 6:00. Sunday brunch is served 11:00 - 3:00 p.m. They're closed Tuesday's. Reservations are recommended. (340/772-5855).
