A Disappointment

This was our fifth trip to St. Augustine and our first stay at Hisbiscus. St. Augustine is a wonderful place for a wholesome, family vacation, but Hisbiscus is NOT appropriate for young families. There is no sound insulation ( building quality is shabby) and you are at the mercy of the other family groups in your building. In our case, we were treated to two nights of drunken debauchery.

The management company is letting the property slip. It took three complaints and three days for broken exterior lighting to be repaired. The broken deadbolt that we reported on our first day was never repaired.

We stayed in unit A303 which is oceanfront and has a nice porch. The unit was spacious and was well furnished.

The complex is located near the point on the beach where motor traffic enters. Hence, there is a steady stream of motor vehicles traveling on the beach. We were disappointed since the Hibiscus website clearly said that the complex was away from the public beach. It should say that it is on a nice wide stretch of public beach with significant vehicular traffic. If you bring small children, keep a watchful eye because the traffic is not limited to the "traffic lane." There were many scooters, motorbikes, etc all over the beach. Not a beach for rest and relaxation.

The complex charges a $100 cleaning fee but you are expected to get up early on your last day and wash all of your linens, rugs, etc and clean up the kitchen. Since the check out time is 10 am, we were up at 6:30 in order to run everything through the washer. In addition, we had to do significant cleaning on our first day since the bathroom rugs had not been washed ( I don't blame former guests--the cleaning fee should cover this), there were dirty dishes in the cabinets ( dried peanut butter--yuck!) and there were long black hairs all over the master bath ( we all have blonde hair).

If you like this location on the beach , the Ocean Gallery next door looked a lot nicer and the guests seemed satisfied. I would recommend that families with children consider staying a mile or so north where no cars are allowed on the beach.

If you want to stay at Hisbuscus, consider staying on the first floor or bring a flashlight so that you can see to get up the stairs at night and bring some earplugs in case you get noisy neighbors.

Hibiscus

Best Things Nearby:
Plenty of great dining places, the alligator farm, and historic shopping area all within close driving distances. The WORLD GOLF VILLAGE is very close as well.

Best Things About the Resort:
The condo units are very close to a wonderful heated pool and a short walk to the beach. It is not in the busiest part of St Augustine, which provides a more private and relaxing time.

Resort Experience:
I realize that I live only 30 minutes west of St. Augustine, and I love this place. This was the first time I actually stayed, due to my daughter's spring break, and I could still go to work. I will return!

The Hibiscus resort is a relaxing and enjoyable place to stay. Most of the condos are owned by locals with two of the five buildings used for timeshares. The timeshare buidings surround the heated swimming pool. There are three pools and two hot tubs total in the resort. There is also a tennis court. The two-bedroom unit is very spacious and provided easy access to the pool and the beach. The unit has all you need, and the master bedroom also has a very large whirlpool tub in the room. The beach is accessed easily and provides plenty of white sand to do the beach thing. During this week in April, things are not busy, and you do not have to worry about college spring-breakers. The weather is warm in the day and cool at night. The beach is pretty to look at, but the water is way too cold.

PROS: This condo is at the south end of the beach and provides a quieter and more relaxing atmosphere. With St. Augustine still being relatively small, everything is within a CONS: The condo is an older place from the '80s. Some of the decor could use some updating. The master bed is a disappointing double (a little cramped). The tennis court needs some serious care. Be aware that in this part of Florida driving on the beach is permitted! No playground or resort activities.
