The campsite is two hundred metres beyond the Once Brewed National Park Visitors’ Centre and the Twice Brewed Inn on the B6318 Newcastle to Carlisle Road. The camping area is spread across two fields - a small space in front of the farmhouse and a large, open area off to the right sheltered on one side by trees and a dry stone wall. There’s a small space for barbecues in the corner of the larger field with running water from a tap and a couple of picnic benches alongside. The other facilities are next to the main farm buildings - a toilet block halved into male and female sides with a row of sinks and a shower in each plus a separate shower to the side. The toilets are clean but cold and basic - there’s a mirror and a larger sink for washing dishes in each; the showers are hot once you’re inside but there’s not much space to get changed and it would be better if the shower room was fully enclosed as the autumnal air in these parts is on the wrong side of bracing.
Hadrian’s Wall can be reached by following the dirt path that starts to the left of the toilet block to the top of the hill, from where the car park at Steel Rigg is just a ten-minute walk away. There are two pubs in the area, the closest is the Twice Brewed Inn, which has Budvar and a number of real ales on tap and a restaurant at the back. If you haven’t brought your own breakfast, you can buy bacon sandwiches inside the farmhouse, where laundry facilities are also available. All things considered, Winshields is a great place to spend a night before exploring the nearby sections of the wall, but I’d spend a little more money on a room at the Twice Brewed Inn or on the higher rated campsites in Haltwhistle if I were staying any longer than that.
The Visit Britain two star rated campsite is open from April to October. Rates are £4 per person per night, plus 50p for each car for tents and £8 per night for the camp barn.
