For any backpacker, this is like a five-star resort. By this time, we had gotten used to staying in rundown hostels and had actually begun to enjoy it, but this was far from rundown. Hostal Prat only cost us about $15 (it might be around $20 during the peak season). It is located on the waterfront a couple blocks from the downtown area, but it is a nice walk along the waterfront to get there. For $15 we got a heck of a deal. We had a private room with two single beds. The room was not something you would expect from a hostel. It was clean and respectable, like a hotel room but with the unique feel of a local hostel. The sheets and pillows were hotel quality, not the hostel quality where you are wondering if you are going to wake up with bug bites all over. The room also included a TV with all the cable channels you would need. I can't forget the private bathroom. It’s always nice to get a shower with decent water pressure when you've been backpacking for awhile. If you thought that was all, you are wrong. The $15 also included breakfast, which was the typical Chilean breakfast of toast, jelly, cheese and ham, and lots of instant coffee. We really couldn't believe how nice it was when we got there. The whole place was very clean and the owners very hospitable.
A great option while staying at Hostal Prat is walking to the local liquor store, buying a case of the local Kunstmann beer and enjoying a little celebration along the waterfront near the hostel.
I'm sure there are plenty of excellent alternatives for accommodation in Valdivia, but I do highly recommend the Hostal Prat. It is the bargain to end all bargains. Again, this is speaking from a backpacker’s point of view and compared to other prices/accommodations I have experienced in Chile, so keep that in mind.
