Luperon Beach Hotel

Best Things Nearby:
Beach, airport.

Best Things About the Resort:
Friendly Canadians.

Resort Experience:
Even though the pictures of the Luperon Beach Resort and Luperon Tropical Resort show a tropical paradise, DO NOT be fooled. We stayed at this resort from 12-25-03 to 01-01-04.

Although we made it clear to the travel agent; the resort representative who met us at the airport; and the front desk staff upon on arrival, the hotel did not acknowledge that this was our honeymoon.

We had to wait more than three hours for our room to be prepared for us. Unfortunately what we received was a shock as this was a truly bad room. For starters, the doors did not lock, the water in the bathroom was brown, and there was no furniture with the exception of two beds with sheets only and no comforters or blankets. What’s more, the refrigerator did not work, the television had to warm up before it was functional.

We refused this room and went to the front desk to ask to another room. Again, we explained this was our honeymoon; our representative stated that this was an oversight and that my wife and I were going to be upgraded to a suite assured us. Unfortunately, this did not happen. The front desk manager sent us on a wild goose chase to look at one bad room after another. These rooms were either under renovation, dirty, or not the upgrade promised us. After two hours of this, I lost my temper and demanded our money back with immediate transportation to the airport (at the hotel’s expense). At this point, the front desk manager "found" us a livable room (however, the first night we found ants and cockroaches in the bathroom, so we kept our clothes in our suitcases and not the old desk). Although we had a TV, there was no remote (the front desk clerk will argue otherwise); the same for the A/C unit. We considered ourselves lucky that our fridge worked, as many did not. Be aware that a safe is US$10 per day and located in a closet whose doors would not close.

We found it disturbing that hotel staff kept coming to our room throughout the week looking for other people. We were never really sure why this was until checkout. . . the front desk manager registered us in the wrong room and when it came time to check out, the desk clerk became frustrated because he could not find us in the guest register. Eventually, we were just told to leave. We did not have time to correct the situation as the bus was leaving for the airport. Although there weren’t any charges added to our room (that we know of), there is no proof beyond our airline tickets to prove we actually left the resort. ADVICE: Avoid having extra charges added to your bill by paying in cash. Do not use your credit card at checkout

There are a number of things we were not impressed with. There are daily ‘rolling’ blackouts and water service is turned off at night (no flushing or washing hands). Because the water is not potable, we had to purchase bottles of water everyday for both consumption and personal hygiene. Maid service was inconsistent and some days the room was not cleaned until 6pm. . . meaning there weren’t fresh bath towels until then. Also, fresh beach towels were out of the question. Although towels were supposed to be ready at 9am each day, this was rarely the case and we were forced to hold on to the towels we had to ensure we had some.

At the end of each hallway, there was a "janitor's room" with a slop sink, where dirty laundry and dirty dishes and other odds and ends were just dropped, but never picked up. The room was always open and its unsanitary contents were on display.

The buffet has the same food day after day and, sometimes, meal after meal. On a number of occasions, the ‘mystery meat’ served at dinner would find its way to the breakfast buffet as something by another name. Because the package was all-inclusive, drinks were included. At the beginning of the day, they were cold and very good; however, by mid-afternoon, blender drinks were often runny and warm. The a la carte restaurants were good (if you could get a reservation).

The beach was nice and often patrolled by the local police and security force (strange to see but you get used to it). Unfortunately, there is a severe shortage of chairs, as people will hoard them. A fight broke out between someone wanting a chair and someone unwilling to give one up. The same thing took place at each of the pools (we witnessed people claiming chairs at 7am and then leaving for hours on end (the pool attendants were no help is resolving the problem). Also, the aerobics instructors are laughable and have no clue what they are doing. They are an insult to anyone who either teaches or takes a class.

There is literally little to nothing to do at night; swimming is restricted after 7pm and guests are warned away from the beach. There is no real entertainment with exception of the guest participation shows that are run by real amateurs.

All the trips off the resort are geared toward tourists and are approximately US$100 each. They are low quality, low value, and most not worth the price charged.

The hotel makes a very poor attempt to make itself handicapped or wheel chair accessible. The paths are steep and there are stairs everywhere. Although there is access to two of the five pools, there is no access to the other three or the beach.

We made the mistake of listening to a staff member who we thought was trying to make our stay a little more enjoyable and taking us to a manager rep. As it turned out, it turned out to be a salesman giving us a sales pitch trying to get us to invest in the resort!

Based on these issues, the fact the resort is stuck in absolutely nowhere and that it takes a sickening dumpy 90-minute ride on a bus driven by a maniac, we will not recommend that anyone visit this resort. As timeshare owners we thought we would take the chance on a last minute holiday, but we have learned that travel agents can't be trusted. ***This resort gives out free cigarettes, so be prepared to be surrounded by smoke at all meals, and usually at the pool and beach as well.***
