We thought from all the reviews that we had read about this resort that we were just going to love it. We didn't think it was bad, but it started as a disaster.

We get there and are given a room that had a smoker in it previously who must have smoked for the entire week because we were the second family to request another room. They gave us another and things went smoothly until about 10pm that night when the hot water tank gave out and they wanted us to go to another room for one night only and then change again the next day. So we stayed for the night and finally by noon the next day we got another room in the pouring rain. Did management really care about our experience? No, they called only the last night before we were going to go home to ask if they could do something to make it up to us. Thanks for nothing.

So what about the hotel? We saw two 1-bedroom suites with lofts. The first was larger but the second had a half-bath in the upstairs loft and was more convenient. The kitchens are small with a microwave, mini-fridge, and stovetop but no dishwasher, washer-dryer or stove. We had a fireplace in the rooms, but they could only use specific logs, which they sold at the front desk for around $4. We did that a couple of nights and the logs lasted around 2.5 hours.

The grounds were beautiful but the walk to the parking area was long and the resort has no elevator, so going in with a lot of luggage and groceries was a bad situation, especially having to move from room to room.

They have a nice workout room with plenty of machines, a decent-sized indoor pool (with regularly scheduled workouts in the pool), and a large hot tub. They also have a pool outside with a kiddie area near the Long Island Sound. There is a game room for the kids and they have a beautiful restaurant overlooking the water.

We had a nice size great room (living room, dining area, and kitchen) with a loft which had two twin beds. Our bedroom had a queen. Like I said earlier, we had seen two units and the larger was newer but had a VCR instead of the DVD player in the smaller unit.

We didn't eat in the restaurant because we thought that the prices were too high (the Sunday brunch was highly rated, but for $30+ it was too much for us.) But there are plenty of nice restaurants in the area and two casinos (30 minutes away).

So in conclusion, it's a nice place and we thought that the resort has a lot to offer, but we just had a lot of problems and the staff gave us the runaround. The time we went was just about a week past prime foliage time but it was still a pretty time to go.

Water's Edge

Best Things Nearby:
Long Island Sound, outlet shopping in Clinton and Westbrook, the Aquarium at Mystic, the subbase at Groton, and the Coast Guard Academy at New London.

Best Things About the Resort:
There are loads of amenities offered here: tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, ocean views, game room, lounge, workout room, Jacuzzi, sauna, and a lounge with entertainment on Friday and Saturday evening. On Sunday, the restaurant has a brunch that has been voted "Best in Connecticut." Room service is also available.

Resort Experience:
Water’s Edge is a four-season resort and spa. Located on Long Island Sound, it seemed like the perfect place for us to take a "none vacation." I work about 4 miles away and Al about 15. Compared to my usual 30-mile drive, I felt like that alone would be a vacation. You have a choice of accommodation, as there are hotel rooms as well as villas. Water’s Edge is part of RCI and offers timeshare options. We had a one-bedroom villa with a loft. Our unit could sleep six if you include our sleeper sofa.

Our week was Friday to Friday, check-in after 5pm on Friday and check-out at 10am. Since our week included Valentine's Day, we received a complimentary $25 gift card to a local jewelry store, which I thought was a nice touch.

All the villas that sleep six are on the second floor, and there are no elevators, so keep that in mind when packing. Also, you cannot park near the villas; it isn’t like a motel. It can be a bit of walk, so, again, be careful what you pack. We walked into our kitchen, dining, and living room combination and were very impressed. It is quite lovely, with a large table, partial kitchen (there is no oven), and couch and comfortable chairs.

Our bedroom has a king-size bed, club chair, telephone, dresser, and TV with remote (though it is a small one). There are two lamps and a pole lamp. The closet has a safe, iron, and ironing board.

Upstairs there is a loft bedroom with twin beds and a lavatory, perfect for children. On the lower level, our bathroom is very good size, with two sinks and a tub. Everything is in good repair, and when we couldn’t figure out how to plug in our TV, engineering sent a man up within 5 minutes, and even he had a hard time finding it.

There is an on-site spa, and I will make a separate entry on my visit there since I have booked several services. One downside is that there is no wi-fi in the villas. I was able to connect my laptop through the telephone in the bedroom, but the connection was painfully slow. I guess it's better slow than not at all, but I have gotten quite spoiled and I expect every place I stay to offer it.

There are sliding glass doors off the living room onto a deck with two chairs and a table. In February we won’t be using it much. Unfortunately, our unit was smoking and we were never told it might be. Be sure to ask for nonsmoking if you have an allergy.

On-site amenities included a full spa, tennis courts, gym, pool area, exercise area, and more. The grounds are well groomed, probably a great place for a wedding if you lived nearby!
