I really liked this hostel - it's run by a family and there is a great, informal family atmosphere about the place. We stayed in cabin-like rooms to the back of the hostel, which meant it was quiet and more private than most hostels. The kitchen was huge and well stocked (fresh herbs available) although the hostel is next door to KFC, if you don't feel like cooking! You can also learn bone-carving on site, if you have a spare evening. The best part about this hostel was the advice about where to go on the peninsula, and the fact that we could borrow boogie boards and toboggons for free. This was excellent when visiting Cape Reinga, as it meant we could properly enjoy the 100ft high sand dunes, and some of the great surf beaches that the area has to offer.
