Anybody that has backpacked through Interlocken, knows the name Balmers. For those who have never had the opportunity, this is the place to be. Not the cleanest, or cheapest hostel in the area, but by far the best. If you are looking for a quiet sanctuary in the mountains, see my other listing for the Mountain Hostel, if you like to party and 'mingle' with other people travelling, this is the place to be.
We made it our home base for five out of the seven nights that we were in the area, due simply to how much fun both the travellers and staff are. The staff are very accomodating and helpful, most of the time when they are not working they are hanging out with the guests in the hostel and showing them around town. One of my best memories about Balmers was the moment we got off the train. As we began our walk toward the hostel, this AUDI station wagon pulled over and asked us if we needed a lift, well the driver turned out to be Eric Balmer, the owner of the hostel. This act of kindness is just one example of the type of service and attitude that you can expect at this great hostel.
