We chose to travel to this rather out of the way place because of the way it was described in the Michelin Camping Guide to France (which I had picked up cheap in a sale in Hull)! it included the idea that it was unspoiled and I think everyone had visions of every square millimetre being full of campers looking for an unspoiled site. Fortunately the same description could still have been used when we arrived
I say fortunately as we were desperately tired, having crossed from Dover to Calais at 2a.m. and travelled almost non-stop all day. The only fly in the ointment was the weather. Heavy rain had started to fall and we put the tent up as fast as we could. Having cokked a meal we were delighted to find somewhere indoors to eat it and it was not until well into the meal that we suddenly cottoned on to the fact that we had wandered into a gite and that the proper occupiers were watching us. They really could not have been nicer and more welcoming and would not hear of us taking the remaining food back to our own tent.
The showers seemed like a foretaste of Heaven next morning and we thoroughly enjoyed our three nights on the site. We even managed to retrieve the watch that one of the lads left in the shower area.
Sixt is fairly remote from Chamonix and the principal Alpine tourist area but its situation is marvellous even so. We had a perfect view of some of the really high stuff and the immediate environment was stunningly beautiful. [see page on Walks at Sixt]
