Description: In May 2005, the Hotel Diamond opened. It was a historical landmark because the original hotel, when it opened in September 3, 1904, was Chico's "only strictly first-class house in Chico, and the superior of any North of Sacramento." In 2005, with the reopening, the quote is still true. Prior to the Diamond opening, downtown hotel options were Motel 6 and the like for cheap overnight stays. The hotel is what I would consider a boutique hotel, with 43 rooms and suites. The Hotel Diamond is luxury for downtown Chico. The highlights of this hotel are its location, luxury beds, historical decor, and great staff.
1) Location: Perfect! In the center of downtown, with a free garage parking, we walked everywhere and never moved the car all weekend. There are great restaurants all around and boutique shopping, and it 2 blocks from the CSU Chico campus and bars/nightlife. However, even in the midst of the college town, it is still quiet and peaceful inside the hotel.
2) Luxury Amenities: Down comforters, extra pillows, pillow-top mattresses: I would compare this to the heavenly beds of the Westin. There is a personal in-room climate control. (Chico can have 110°F weather in the summer.) Robes, slippers, Aveda products, complimentary water, local almonds, and a welcome note are also included.
3) Historical Decor: This hotel was built well and with careful considerations regarding the historical significance in Chico. There is a hardwood-floor lobby and banister, like the design of the 100-year-old hotel; beautiful ceiling; and furniture especially made for the hotel.
4) Friendly, accommodating, and very professional staff: The front-desk staff was helpful, providing maps beyond the downtown area, and knowledgeable about the town.
Well be happy to visit Chico again soon and stay at the Hotel Diamond.
