Pousada Paraju

We got off the bus that had driven us from Rio de Janeiro at about half past 9pm. We had made tentative reservations at the YHA youth hostel, so we jumped in a taxi and asked the driver to take us there. Relieved at the thought of finally being able to take a shower and go out and get some dinner, we entered. Not only was the staff unfriendly, but this place was truly a dive. One look at the bedroom was enough for us all to start panicking. We hit the road again, praying that we’d be able to find somewhere better.

Fortunately, pousadas (small guesthouses a bit like B&Bs) line the streets of Buzios. There are plenty of them; all you have to do is take your pick. Walking down a side street near Praia de Geriba (one of the most popular beaches in Buzios), we spotted one that looked quite nice. It was about 10pm by now, and we hoped that it wouldn’t be too late.

Fortunately, a gentleman came to the door with a beaming smile that instantly made us feel welcome and slightly less apprehensive. He showed us in and let us look around one of the rooms, which was going to cost even less than the dire youth hostel. It was as though we were being shown heaven – the beds were comfortable, the room was immaculate and nicely decorated, there was an en-suite bathroom with a powerful shower that had hot water, a television, and even a minibar stocked with goodies, water, and the most delicious chocolate milk I have ever tasted in my life (and these things were not charged at standard minibar prices, i.e. not too expensive!). A hammock was strung up on the back porch, and there was a small swimming pool, too. We took the room in a shot.

After we had all showered, our hunger had really kicked in, so we decided to go and track down some food. The host gave us tips on where to go and advised us how to get downtown – very helpful. We were welcome to come back however late we wanted – somebody would let us through the front gate.

In the morning, we woke up hungry again (dinner had been partied off long ago!), but there was a delicious breakfast waiting for us (all included in the price): fresh tropical fruits, croissants, bread, cold meats, and yoghurts. While we stuffed our faces, the owner helped us organise a buggy to drive around Buzios and arranged to have it dropped off – again, we were blown away at how helpful he was.

It’s in such a good location (literally minutes walk from the beach and from the main road, where you can get buses to the centre of the action) and is such good value for money, run by such friendly and helpful people - definitely highly recommended!
