Blast from the Past...!

I am pretty sure I stayed here in 1997! I thought his name was Mr Bold, but it could have easily been Bolod. This guy was great, spoke English and was incredibly kind and informative. He also took us on a trip to stay with a nomadic family in their ger and it was the most fabulous adventure we ever had. The guesthouse itself was pretty basic and I remember it was $5 /night even back then! They didn't even have a proper shower then, just a bucket of water and a foot pump, which pumped the water over your head! Just two rooms with a few back packers and a tiny kitchen where we all drank lots of chinngis khan vodka.... what more could you ask for?

Great Trip

My boyfriend and I booked a tour with Bolod during our 2 days in Mongolia at the end of January. He was absolutely fantastic, providing an amazing off the beaten track experience, where we stayed with a nomadic family in the national park outside Ulaan Bataar. He met us straight off the Trans-Siberian train (even though it was an hour early, he was there), we stayed at his home (as his central guest house is not open in the winter) and he stayed with us all the time when we stayed with the family.

Staying at his house was lovely and his tour was just great, as he could translate and his guiding was just perfect.

He is a wonderful man, speaking many languages and he is happy to tailor make trips any where in Mongolia, doing whatever you would like. During the summer you will be guided by one of his experienced and trustworthy drivers and in the winter when it is quieter he will generally guide you himself, which is just perfect.

Bolod's Guesthouse

Mr Bolod runs this guesthouse with his wife. He is an incredibly friendly guy.

There are only two dormitory rooms: one for the guys and one for the girls, I think. I recall it was around U.S.$5 for the night. As Bolod put it, "Lonely Planet tells me $5, so I say $5."

It is essentially just a small flat with a couple of rooms that he has let out to backpackers. There is just one bathroom and a small kitchen, but it's really all you need.

It lacks the rigid uniformity of other hostels--each bed is different, and none of them have the same linen. It looks quite eclectic and gives the place some real character.

It has a great homely feel, which is encouraged by Bolod's enthusiastic conversation. It's pretty basic, but I'd highly recommend it.
