We pulled up to the beautiful and extremely expansive resort. The fruit juice they provided while we checked in was refreshing. The resort was immaculately kept, and our room was lovely, spacious, and included a marble bathroom. The turndown service was a nice bonus, but sometimes wasn’t until very late. We stayed in the main building, but the resort had a number of villas and suites throughout the property. There were three beautiful pools, a wonderful spa, a very well-equipped fitness center, a popular casino, and a wonderful beach with plenty of cabanas (free) and beach chairs. The beach had a very good reef for snorkeling, much better than Turtle Beach. There was a bar right on the beach, but you do have to contend with local vendors trying to peddle local goods and services. There are daily resort activities posted by the pool, with plenty of children activities, but luckily, there were only a handful the time we were there.
The entire resort was gorgeous, but the service was lacking. We are, to this day, not sure if it was the resort or the island, as everyone is so laid-back. We waited 10 minutes at the poolside restaurant for someone to provide us with water and menus, then it took another hour to get our meal of a burger and salmon salad and the check.
The restaurants are very overpriced, especially the Italian place. We spent almost $200 for two orders of osso bucco, two antipasto salads, and a bottle of San Pellegrino. I also let the front desk know that none of the ice machines worked on our floor, and they were still not fixed when we left. The ones the next floor up worked and were probably closer to our room. There were shops in the lobby, nothing too exciting, but the "general" store had a great variety of sundries and groceries very reasonable prices. You could buy bottled beer there for 2.50 to 3.50 EC, compared to 4 to 5 EC at the bars. The casino is quite large, and the comps aren’t great, but you are in the Caribbean.
Even with the slow service and overpriced food, it was the best resort on the island. We did meet a number of great couples, and it was a good time.
