Black Rock Lodge

My husband and I stayed in a River View Cabana ($95 per night for two persons). As the name suggests, it had a spectacular view of the pristine Macal River!

The cabana was spotlessly clean. For beds, it had a queen-size bed and a double bed. Both mattresses were in excellent shape. The pillows were comfortable. The shower was good and hot, with plenty of pressure. It was probably one of the best showers I had taken in a long time.

Although days in the tropics are warm, the nights in the mountains at Black Rock Lodge were cool and there was no need for a fan. It is my understanding that their nicer cabanas, called Deluxe Cabanas ($145 per night for two persons), have a fan, two queen-size beds, and also a great view of the Macal River. We both felt that the rates charged were very affordable and the value for the dollar was excellent. In our research, we also found that Black Rock Lodge was the most affordable lodge on the Macal River and, by far, had the best location!

The food, tours, and accommodations were top-notch. We especially liked the fact that the entire lodge is solar- and hydro-powered and that most of the fruits and vegetables we ate in the open-air dining pavilion were grown on the property!

This eco-lodge is in the middle of the rain forest. We loved it! To get there you get picked up in town by one of the property hosts. It is about 10 miles from town but feels like a million miles from anywhere once you are there. The cabanas were large, clean, comfortable, and a great value for the price we paid, somewhere around $50 a night. Splurge for the ones with a private bathroom; you may be able to upgrade upon arrival for a cheaper rate.

Once you are at the resort, you feel like you are in another world. Even the birds sing different songs than the ones I am used to in Pennsylvania! Take advantage of the horseback riding tour through the jungle or just grab a book and spend the afternoon lounging on a hammock overlooking the river. We also enjoyed playing Scrabble on the large deck.

All of your meals can be eaten at the Lodge. The food is delicious! Breakfast and lunch are made to order from a menu. Dinner is served at 7:00 and all guests eat together (chef's choice). Every meal seemed even better than the one before. Upon your arrival, you will be asked about any dietary restrictions or preferences. This is not a place if you like nightlife. You pretty much have to entertain yourself after the sun sets, but we wore ourselves out so much during the day that it didn't matter one bit. The people here are wonderful and the grounds are beautiful. Enjoy your stay!
