This is the experience that inspired my quest to become a "tourist in my own town." I'd been to the neighborhood, even seen the mansion, but never with that slack jawed, ever-looking-up posture of the traveler. But after my weekend stay at the Acanthus Inn Bed and Breakfast near downtown Milwaukee, I am inspired to rediscover my hometown as a newcomer might.
I received a gift certificate to the Acanthus Inn from my sister, who insisted it was a "must-see". I couldn't agree more. It's a beautiful Queen Anne mansion in an often-ignored neighborhood filled with scores of elegant manors. It's just 5 minutes to downtown, on the edge of the Marquette campus, and minutes to Potawatomi Bingo, Miller Brewery Tour, and Petit Ice Center (more on these later).
But more impressive than the gorgeous guest rooms was the impressive breakfast. Turns out Walter, the proprietor, served in his first career as a gourmet chef at several fusion style restaurants. Fresh fruit, hand-ground coffee, and what he did with simple eggs was amazing. My special order was met with glee. He even wrapped a bit for a snack later on. Truly an exceptional host.
I'm glad my sister switched from the yearly book store gift certificate. I'm inspired to find what else I've been missing right outside my front door.
