Good for an Overnight Stay

Good for an Overnight Stay

I booked the least expensive room category, I believe it was a King Lanai room, using my points. The room was on the small side but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was nice. We were not able to get the room very cool with the air conditioning though—I don’t think it got cool until the morning. There was a balcony and we had a nice view of their lagoon. We arrived at the hotel around 8 pm. We had dinner in the restaurant next to the bar. Our dinner here was quite good and very large portions. We also exchanged money here—we forgot to do it at the airport! Luckily they had a machine where you could exchange the money that gave a much better rate than doing it at the hotel desk.

InterContinental Tahiti (Papeete)

InterContinental Tahiti (Papeete)

We decided to bookend our trip on the Tahitian Princess with stays at the InterContinental Tahiti before and after our cruise.

For those wanting to stay on the island of Tahiti (rather than on Moorea, a short ferry ride away), there are few accommodation options, at least where price is concerned. There are a few hostels (which are quite inexpensive but are very basic and offer very little in the way of amenities), there are a few tourist-class hotels/motels in the city of Papeete itself (still fairly basic in a not particularly glamorous location and not necessarily inexpensive), and, of course, the many and varied high-priced resorts (great location, excellent amenities, and very high price tag).

We felt the resort option would be the best in our particular situation and chose the IC Tahiti, as it was close to the airport, was the least expensive of the resorts at the time we made our booking (at $280), and had an absolutely beautiful pool. Yes, really.

We arrived in the middle of the night by taxi from the airport and were greeted by friendly porters in pareos, handed chilled tropical drinks, and led to our room.

Our room was very well appointed and immaculately clean, with a luxury island feel. Garden view rooms include a private balcony, bathroom with tub and shower, and a small desk/seating area. Rooms also include a minibar, in-room safe, and tea/coffeemaker. The resort offers a range of rooms in the main buildings, as well as the ubiquitous overwater bungalows French Polynesia is famous for.

The hotel itself is a long sprawling complex set on beautiful tropical gardens with two gorgeous pool areas. The main pool has a shallow "zero-entry" area perfect for sunbathing or just lounging around in the pool, plus a waterfall and grotto area. The Lotus Pool (with a swim-up bar) is a unique experience, a sand-bottom infinity pool with beautiful views of Moorea and the lagoon. The pool was by far our favourite, and we found it to be less crowded than the main pool.

Another unique feather of the IC Tahiti Resort is their "Lagoonarium," a sand-bottom outdoor aquarium of sorts with many corals and tropical fish. They have created a beautiful ecosystem, and guests have the option of actually swimming and snorkelling in the Lagoonarium itself and watching the daily "fish feedings" by hotel staff.

There are two main restaurants, the Tiare and Le Lotus, as well as the Tiki Bar, Lobby Bar, and, of course, the Le Lotus swim-up bar. The Tiare is the main restaurant, while Le Lotus is the gourmet French overwater restaurant on-site. The resort offers Tahitian Dance shows (with the option of a buffet dinner) on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Overall, we found the IC Tahiti resort to be a great place to relax and settle into the groove of Tahiti and French Polynesia.

Intercontinental Resort Hotel

This is our favorite hotel in the South Pacific. It is under 5 miles to downtown Papeete and about 1 mile and a half to the airport. This luxury resort has 263 units and over 32 over-the-water bungalows. Many of the hotel staff members speak English, French, German, Italian, and Japanese. This resort has a business center, gift shop, pearl shop, currency exchange desk, high-speed Internet access, two restaurants, two swimming pools, and a lagoon aquarium.

A lagoon aquarium is a section of the lagoon stocked with the fish of the South Pacific. Just put your snorkel and fins on and go take a look! What a wonderful spot for adults and children to view fish!

The original swimming pool on the property has a fine sand bottom all the way to the sea wall. The sea wall is perfect for relaxing against while looking at the lagoon and viewing the island of Moorea, which is directly across from this resort. There is also a swim-up bar.

The new swimming pool is located in front of the Te Tiare restaurant and is huge. A waterfall is at the end of the deep end. The sea wall on this pool overlooks the lagoon aquarium. I find both pools very relaxing.

Although we did not stay in the over-the-water bungalows this trip, I can tell you that room no. 512, which is the last bungalow on the walkout dock, faces Moorea and offers a perfect sunset and solid privacy. I would recommend this room for the perfect honeymoon. The last time we spent a week in this over-the-water bungalow, we had all our meals delivered!

The other 263 units and 31 other bungalows are wonderful and comfortable. Many of them have provided us with a much need rest before or after our long flights to and from the United States. This hotel is used to checking people in and out in the middle of the night.

The entire hotel is has been landscaped, and gardens have been planted to provide a beautiful setting for this resort.
