Hotel Mancarron

There are ten double apartment cabins with comfortable twin beds, copious cold water showers and lots of storage room. At midday, the shower is actually hot from the solar heating on the exposed connecting pipes. The large rooms are screened and have floor fans, though warm in the day, the evenings are cool and The Hotel is situated on a hill about 200 meters walk along a trail from the pier on the island of Mancarron. the cross ventilation helps to keep the rooms refreshed. Electric power is on only from 5 to 10 PM and there is good lighting along the inter-cabin walkways. Be sure to keep the doors closed at all times since various members of the local wildlife can quickly enter the rooms and cause some unpleasant surprises, especially at night. A flashlight is a necessary night aid, though wax candles are available in the rooms I found the matches supplied could be damp and useless, so take a gas lighter. The cabins should also be sprayed with Baygon or a “safe” insect spray before leaving for dinner to assure all bugs are safely neutralized when one returns.

The surrounding garden is well cared for though many of the bushes have thorns and birds make their nests in them for security. These birds can startle a passing guest in the night, so be prepared for a feathered encounter. There are also lots of insect eating bats hovering about the lights along the way and large toads awaiting falling bugs. Keep a flashlight handy since the electric power can be briefly stopped at any time depending upon the quality of the fuel used and the present maintenance of the generator.

Your host speaks some limited English and is very willing to arrange guided tours or fishing trips around the different islands. The hotel rate includes three large meals with a local menu and there is usually a limited supply of cold refreshments available from the bar.
