The Diamond District Breakfast Inn is the only place to stay. I mean that quite literally - it is the only lodging available in the city. Fortunately, it is also a restored, Georgian –style mansion, built in 1911 and 1 block from the shoreline. Owned and operated by locals, Sandra & Jerry Caron; who picked up on the fact that Lynn, a of city of 80,000 people, 9 miles from Boston as the crow flies, had no lodging options after the Edison Hotel fell into disrepair in the 1980’s.
The Diamond District is the area of Lynn where wealthy shoe factory owners built their personal palaces beginning in the late 1800’s. On present day Lynn Shore Drive, Ocean Street and all the little streets weaving between the two, are fabulous mansions of every style. Most of them have become multi-family homes or condos but a few are still kept as single-family homes.
At the Inn you can have your breakfast in the dining room or in good weather, on the veranda. The breakfast entrees reflect the elegant setting with lobster quiche, eggs Florentine, Belgium waffles or a breakfast puff specials available on different days. They also provide vegetarian and low fat breakfasts.
Since I live in the area, I have never stayed at the Inn so I can’t tell you about the ambiance. But I can tell you that they have a full-size Jacuzzi spa set up out in the back yard for use year round.
Their cancellation policy is severe, requiring 14 days with a $35 service charge, so try not to change your mind. Kids over 12 are allowed but no pets of any kind. All the rooms are non-smoking. The rooms range in price from $145 - $265.
From the Inn you can stroll the neighborhood or walk the beach. From the shoreline at Red Rock Park you can see the Boston skyline across the water. It’s just a short drive along the water to The Porthole Pub in Lynn or any number of restaurants in neighboring Swampscott.
Come on in for a visit and be the first in your neighborhood to say you spent a night in Sin City!
