The resort’s massive 4-1/2 acre atrium is a visual feast with canyons, a river, restaurants, bridges and walkways. For Christmas, 1.2 million lights, Holiday displays, garden-scale trains, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the reindeer are all there to make the Holiday magical.

One of the Christmas displays includes miniature trains running on tracks, a gondola, and trees. Every 15 minutes a light show to music stops visitors here. Most impressive is the timing of the lights to the music, especially when the music is Wizards in Winter by the Trans Siberian Orchestra.

Though we were there for a business convention at a special rate of $157/night, we were upgraded to a suite, which overlooked a large gingerbread house/store in the atrium. The suite was comfortable with the living area having plenty of room for a couch, TV armoire, table for 4, office desk, high-speed Internet, and wing chair. The bedroom was a little crowded, but we certainly didn’t complain about the Texas-sized king bed. It was very comfortable with a pillow-top mattress, soft bedding and terrific pillows. I'd have sworn I was sleeping on a Westin Heavenly bed.

With a 1:1 guest-employee ratio, we felt welcome and appreciated during our stay. A burned-out light bulb over the shower was replaced within 15 minutes of my request.

My key card had been finicky for a couple of days, and one morning upon my return from the fitness room, it quit working entirely. Because I didn’t have my ID on me, the front desk wasn't able to give me a new key card. Security was called to meet me at my room. After waiting 15-20 minutes, I called again and someone showed up in about 5 minutes.

The 25,000 square foot fitness room and spa will help you keep your fitness routine and get pampered. I used the fitness room almost every morning. Towels and earphones for the TVs are provided. There is a water fountain, but I recommend bringing one of your free water bottles from the guestroom. Treadmills, elliptical, stationary bikes, free weights, and weight machines are pretty much everything you need.

My friend and I didn’t want to splurge for a massage, but we thought we’d use the indoor pool. We changed in the spa dressing room and sat in the lounge chairs by the pool. It turns out the indoor pool is a little too cold, and while the outdoor pool and hot tub area is beautiful, it was snowing and we weren’t about to go out there in our swim suits! There is no indoor hot tub, which was very much missed.

A free shuttle takes you to the Grapevine Mills Mall or to downtown Grapevine. Be sure to check the schedule as it only runs at specific times. We stayed at the Gaylord Texan for 5 nights, and a few hours at the mall was the only time spent outside of the Resort. Close
