Hostal La Orquidea

We stayed for three nights in this beautiful old building. At first, we were in a room on the first floor that had no outside windows - you DO NOT want that room. Thankfully we were moved - mainly because the room was needed for someone in a wheelchair. We were upstairs - right at the top of the stairs - I think it was room 12. It was nice - wood floors, clean and with two balconies - one off the bedroom and one off the bathroom - each with double French doors - there was also a large window. This room had three twin beds (not the plushest but they were fine) and a refrigerator. It also had lots of closet space with hangars. The balconies had a great view of the beautiful church right across the street - with tall blue spires - I think it was called Church of San Alfonso. The view in either direction was great. The Plaza Calderon is just a few blocks away. The location of this room was perfect. Breakfast wasn't bad - fruit juice ,coffee and a plate of eggs and very good bread with jam. The service was very pleasant and the building was secure. The price was about 45.00 including breakfast for each of us. Additionally, I had a few articles of clothing laundered and ironed for about a dollar a piece. Great value.

Orquidea has comfortable, clean rooms with plenty of hot water. Perfect location for experiencing colonial Cuenca - very close proximity to the Parque Calderon. Extremely inexpensive - we reserved two rooms each with bath for two nites for around $75 US in September 99. Rooms are off of central 'courtyard' --it's in a renovated colonial building (at times slightly noisy but not enough to interfere with overall quality of stay, it rather adds to the charm). Staff very welcoming. Sampere language school houses a few foreign students here during their stay in Cuenca.
