Boutique-like on a Budget

Located only one half block from the zocolo and 5-10 minutes in a $3-$5 taxi from several beaches known for swimming and snorkeling, this hotel has earned it's high reputation.

Each of the 14 sparkling rooms include a heavenly king bed, flat screen with satellite TV, powerful Air Conditioning and individual touches of minimal Mexican decor. The on site restaurant, Terra Cotta, is known for breakfast and ice cream, of which we tried neither. Rumor is a small swimming pool is being built atop the cool white building which will only increase the appeal of this gem.

The open air office is around the corner on a side street, behind the restaurant which faces Calle Gardenia. We had to wait about 20 minutes until our room was ready or until check in time. Decided to take a quick stroll to get our bearings and find the nearest corner store to buy cold bottled water (although the hotel does provide a bottle or two in the room everyday).

A member of staff led us to the junior suite that was ours for 2 nights before moving to an interior room. Bright, white and fairly large room with neutral tiled floor with a modern sink in the bathroom and strong overhead rain shower head in the rock tiled floor shower. This corner room on the second floor has 2 balconies to watch the parades and crowds gathering for the upcoming Virgen de Guadelupe festival. Different floats with girls dressed in white as Our Lady, bands and fireworks circled around the zocolo Saturday and Sunday, leading up to the main day on Monday. On Sunday night at midnight going into Monday, all the noise started up again as the official celebration began, we sat up in bed with a start and were able to fall asleep again despite the trombones and boom of fireworks.

We packed up all our bags on Monday, left the key and when we returned, picked up the key to our new "interior" room for our last night at Mision. Very quiet with the same fantastic bed as the junior suite and a large table with two chairs but it doesn't include a balcony.

Highly recommended for the comfortable king beds, reasonable rates for all the amenities and being able to save a bundle compared to beachfront hotels.

TIPS
If you don't speak much Spanish, bring a dictionary and practice
No telephones, ask the front desk staff for a wake up knock
Stairs up and down to rooms with only one suite on the ground floor
Interior rooms are very QUIET with only a window into the courtyard
Go between Thanksgiving and Christmas for low rates and great weather Close
