Chretien Point Plantation

Our visits of plantation homes actually did not start on the Great River road but in Sunset La. about 10 miles North of Lafayette. Sunset is set among fertile fields, moss-hung oak trees and race horse farms. It is also the location of Chretien Point Plantation. This French Louisiana 1831 brick mansion was once the center of a 10,000-acre cotton plantation and now is surrounded by sugar cane fields. Jeanne Cornay, one of the present day owners said site was the location of a Civil War battle as she showed us a mini-ball hole in one of the exterior doors. Another unique feature she pointed out with pride, was the back staircase which was copied by Hollywood filmmakers for use in 'Tara' the 'Gone With the Wind' plantation. Chretien Point is one of the old homes that now earns its keep by operating as a Bed and Breakfast. Rates are reasonable and the breakfast is a true dining delight, especially the Anna-Maria pancakes. From Sunset you take La. 93 South, turn right on Bristol Road, then right onto Chretien. You can call them at (800) 880-7050.
