Description: The Hapuna Prince Hotel is located on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island, Hawaii- about a 30 minute drive from the Kona airport. The entrance, surprisingly, is on the inland side of the road, but the coconut tree lined road winds through the luxury home development that is part of the resort and loops back under the main road to lead you down to the ocean where the hotel is located.
The building style is contemporary, executed in neutral toned stucco. The resort is a series of long, low (4 story) buildings with rooms down one side only, such that all rooms in the ocean front building have ocean views. Entering the lobby, the view is spectacular-- a sweeping vista of beach, pool and landscaping.
Check in was comfortable with lilihue juice and chilled face towels provided.
We had booked a king ocean front room. We were given a room on the fourth floor of building three. The room was spacious, the decor a bit dated, but clean, well maintained and functional. Each room has a well made, louvered, screened door in addition to the standard room door--this allows one to open both the lanai door and the room door and let the tropical air flow through the room. Our view was exactly what we expected-- A spectacular sweeping view of one of the world's most beautiful beaches.
Services at the hotel were fine, hotel workers set up umbrellas and lounges upon the beach early each morning. During out visit there was no charge for chairs or umbrellas at either the beach or the pool. Unfortunately, there was also no drink or food service at the beach or pool (there was a bar near the pool that one could order at). The pool was quite warm, the hot tub toasty hot and towel service was open from 8am-5:30pm.
Food was typical of Hawaiin hotels, that is to say, mediocre and expensive. The breakfast buffet was $50 for two, but included a range of American style choices and Japanese choices. Dinner was about $80 for two without alchohol.
Overall, we were extremely pleased with this hotel. The feel is very quiet, low key and relaxed. One is really not even very aware of most other guests. The beach was not at all crowded, the weather was perfect and the secluded feel was exactly what we were after.
