Basic, but the property and the individual rooms were immaculate. Very reliable and perfect for a weekend. There's a small in-ground pool, several free-standing screen porches, hammocks, charcoal grills etc. Also nice is a dock onto the bay across the street for motel use only -- great for crabbing pier. Price per night includes a continental breakfast in the breakfast lobby -- ie english muffins, toast, fruit, cereal, coffee, and OJ. It is family run and has a cheery atmosphere.
Drawbacks are that it is somewhat impractical to ride a bicycle from the motel to the beach -- traffic and distance. A car would probably be the better transportation option to get to the park. Main Street restaurants are however in easy walking distance.
During Pony Penning Week, the Birchwood is probably booked well in advance, and noisy, given its location right next to the grounds used for the fundraising Carnival during Pony Penning.
