Bluegreen Mountain Run at Boyne

One bedroom unit, very small, no Jacuzzi tub. Though, the fireplace was more than adequate to heat the unit. There was a full kitchen and balcony. Also, there was a TV in the bedroom and a CD player and VCR. The living area had a pull-out sofa.

Best Things Nearby:
Avalanche Park

Best Things About the Resort:
Skiing in your backyard, food, heated outdoor pool

Resort Experience:
The staff was very helpful and pleasant, although quite insistent on our attending a presentation even though we are already owners. Mountain Run is new (Boyne isn't), they are still constructing. We had a one-bedroom unit with a fireplace, very nice but small. They say it sleeps four, but I think two adults and one child is about it. When you unfold the sofabed, it takes up most of the living room. There is very little counter space in the kitchen and the dining area is cramped. The bedroom and bathroom are of fair size. We were on the ground floor with a parking lot view. The door wall is tinted, so it's not easy to see in from the outside. There were no windows. The units on the other side of the building have a view of the slopes. The two-bedroom units have a lot more room. They didn't have a lot of activities. Most people go there just for the skiing. They also have a heated outdoor pool you can use in the winter. My husband went in, not me. The tubing is free for the guests, which would have been great if it was running. Not enough snow. We went into town to Avalanche Park. It's a sledding hill that was listed on their things to do. They say it opened at 4pm, but we got there at noon and it was open. We spent most of our time there (we don't ski). The Mexican restaurant in town is awesome! The food at the lodge is good too.

If you like to snowmobile, the resort is near the trails. They don't allow snowmobiling on-site, but you can enter the trails from there. If you don't have a snowmobile, you can rent them nearby.

Jinglun Hotel

We were so pleased with this hotel. The furnishings were new and quite nice. The hotel had lots of amenities as in great toiletries, free bottled water, laundry service, travel agency services, and a doorman who helped control the problem with taxis.

Our package was $990 US for RT air and five nights hotel from Minneapolis, MN. When we called to add a night, the cost was $138US, not negotiatable. I felt we had a terrific value, especially when our travel agent added three nights to our package for free.

The breakfast buffet was great! There was loads of fresh fruit, full English breakfast with pancakes, eggs, omelettes made to order, cheeses and cold cuts, and a full Chinese breakfast. We never tired of our breakfast choices. We also ate at the hotel when they had a dinner seafood buffet. It was a true full spread of seafood that I really enjoyed.

A few words about taxis. There is a history of problems for tourists with taxis overcharging, and we did encounter it a few times. When we didn't take a taxi from the hotel, cab drivers would try to negotiate a price rather than use the meter. We got out of some cabs when this was attempted and they refused to use the meter. The next cab we flagged always used the meter. See the card scanned in to illustrate how our hotel helped monitor cab rates. They would check off our destination or write in the place we wanted to visit, write in the cab number, and tell us about how much the fare should be. When we caught cabs off the street on our return, we knew how much the fare should be, and if our first cab was fair. We really had no problems with taxis while using this system.

A couple of times when we insisted on the meter, the taxi driver would agree. This was the case when we left Beijing for the airport to fly to Xian. The cab driver wanted 100, when Mike questioned why the meter wasn't on. We said "No, meter" and then he tried 80. We insisted on the meter. He agreed and the the cost was 62 plus the toll of 10.

100Yuan = $12US approximately

Most cab rides within Beijing were less than $3 US. This was a great treat as the city sites are rather spread out and the subway system isn't that comprehensive.

Waksachi Village

Waksachi Village is located just north of the Giant Forest in Sequoia National Park. Signs clearly direct guests to park in a lot close to the main lodge for registration. The main desk for is located in the lodge as well as a small gift shop/sundry store and lounge with fireplace. The overall feel is that of a ski lodge. The hotel rooms are located in separate buildings scattered around the area. Each grouping of buildings has a few parking lots.

Three buildings were open when we were there: Sequoia, Stewart, and Silliman. Our room was in Stewart. It had two queen beds, a desk/chair, a table and two chairs, and a wardrobe. The theme was outdoors-ey, but it was a standard-issue hotel room.

Also included was a larger-than-dorm-size refrigerator. There was a phone, but no TV. It was very quiet--probably because it was off season, but maybe because of the absence of TV. There was daily maid service, plenty of towels, and a really good shower. I made the reservations via the website: www.visitsequoia.com

Arenal Observatory Lodge

Small cabin like room with a private bathroom. Clean and simple. Incredible views in a serene and relaxing atmosphere.

The hotel staff especially Estephan (front desk), bent over backwards to be helpful. The nature walks and grounds are varied and beautiful...including the best view of the Volcano if it is not a cloudy day. Pool and jacuzzi area are like a 5 star hawaiian resort.

Retaurant is very good. Be sure to meet the Manager and you'll know where Elvis has been these many years.
