Wave Crest is one block from the ocean with easy access to the beach on a walking trail. The town has many upscale shops and restaurants. Our studio apartment was adequate for 2 people, an old unit, but well maintained with a very friendly staff. There was an outdoor pool and heated hot tub on site. The resort is close to a railroad track, but no difficulty with sleeping.
If you are going to the area in May or June it is best to remember "Gray May and June Gloom". Until we drove to the mountains we did not see the sun for 7 days and average temperature was in the low 60's.
The mountains are within 1 hour drive, with many beautiful hiking trails. Some with very rough terrain. The meadows withing the state/national forests have breath taking views. We plan to return to the area for hiking again. We only went to San Diego one day and visited the zoo and Balboa park.
