When I first visited the Mont in 1993, I opted for a deluxe room with a view at La Vielle Auberge. For $75 I enjoyed all the plumbing conveniences Americans expect, including his and her sinks, a bathtub and shower. To get my money''s worth, I brushed my teeth in both sinks. I had French doors that opened onto a balcony with a table and chairs.
The only drawback to the room was thin walls. I could hear the couple in the adjoining room. Not fair to a woman traveling solo!
I still have the post card of Mont St. Michel, which I mailed to myself, stuck on a cork board in my kitchen. I can point to the second tier of golden-hued stone and say, I slept there!
In preparing for a return trip to the Mont, I haven''t noticed prices to be substantially higher. In ''93, the exchange rate was closer to 5 francs to 1 dollar. Today''s better rate, fluctuating closer to 7 to 1, is all the more to our advantage. I haven''t confirmed my reservations, but when I do, I''ll certainly update with the latest figures.
