Three Mountain Inn

When I opened the door to my room at the Three Mountain Inn, a white clapboard B&B in the tiny, adorable town of Jamaica, Vermont, I’ll admit I was a little concerned. I’d been warned by the staff that the Wardsboro room was a little tight, but this place was SMALL—especially for the money I was paying.

Any other time, maneuvering around the four-poster bed would have been manageable, but with all our bulky skiing gear it an almost insurmountable challenge. Of course, when we realized why the bedroom was so small—because the bathroom was so big—we stopped feeling so slighted. The tub bordered on monstrous, and you could not have asked for a better post-skiing treat than the waterfall shower.

Still, the room could not hold a candle to the Three Mountain Inn’s common areas, which included lots of roaring fireplaces, low beamed ceilings, and comfy couches… all the things you’d want from a cold-weather inn.

The real golden nuggets here, however, were the Three Mountain Inn’s cuisine and its delightful owners. The genuinely friendly Ed and Jennifer were only too happy to stoke the fire or fill up your glass of port, and the food was write-home-about good, with locals pouring in on weekend evenings. The three-course breakfast went from warm scones to pineapple carpaccio to apple-covered pancakes, and dinner wowed us with filet mignon, lobster stew, and sesame-crusted tuna. Oenophiles would be happy, too; the inn proudly displays its Wine Spectator Award of Excellence on the wall by the old-fashioned bar. On New Year’s Eve, Ed and Jennifer brought in a local band and even chipped in to give each guest two complimentary glasses of champagne.

We could not have asked for a more comfortable, romantic place to hang our hats in southern Vermont. And being only 15 minutes from Stratton was an even bigger bonus after stuffing ourselves silly every day on a gourmet breakfast.
