It is located at the dead end of Sugar Mountain Road. The roads can be a problem so bring chains or 4-wheel-drive. It is minutes to Sugar Mountain ski resort. We stayed in a one-bedroom that is about 1000 square feet. The primary complaint was concerning the lack of hot water that never seemed that hot. The front desk would not turn the water up because they said it was set to prevent burns on children. Our unit was on the bottom floor and the entrance and balcony were the same, so you would see people walk by and you felt like you could not open the curtains. The view

The highlight of the unit was the large whirlpool. I could lay down in it and I am over 6-feet. The kitchen was small but had everything that we needed as far as cooking, but only one person could be in there at a time. The bed on the pullout couch was not very comfortable. The bedroom king-sized bed was firm but comfortable. The closets did not have adequate hangers. The bathroom had a single sink with a shower and a whirlpool tub. The washer and dryer was a small apartment stacked size.

The heating type was a baseboard heater and wall-units. It took us some time to adjust them correctly. There is no AC and the way the unit is situated, you could not leave the door open (this was not a problem for us). A plus feature is that the unit had free wireless. There is a starter pack for soap (clothes), paper towels, and toilet paper, but you have to purchase additional. They do re-supply garbage bags. We did hear people upstairs, but it was not that bad.

The amenities were average. The pool was maintained, but had an old look. I went into the pool and hot tub and they were clean. Since these amenities are away from the unit, you have to change there in the bathrooms. There were no lockers or a place for you to put your stuff. Foosball, air hockey, and free arcade game were available. We did not participate in any activities.

Overall, I rate the unit at about two stars based on everything overall. We plan to come back since it is the only timeshare in the area that we can get in.

Best Things Nearby:
We visited on Feb 14-18 2004. The tubing was great! I don't ski but my husband really enjoyed Sugar Mountain. It had beautiful views and it snowed every day!

Best Things About the Resort:
The location is great. Near the top of Sugar Mountain. The snow can cause problems so be prepared. We almost didn't make it back one day. Bring some food in case you get snowed in.

Resort Experience:
We had a hard first couple of days. If you stay here, get a 2 bedroom because they are on the top. We had a 1 bedroom below and we could hear every footstep. The children above us were always runnung around. It kept us up quite a bit. We went to the office to complain and they said to call the police. Not much help. We had words with the people above us but some of the kids left after the weekend was over so the rest of the time was ok.

The area was a lot of fun. Local arts and crafts stores were intersting to see. We drove to Beech Mountain and we couldn't see 2 feet in front of us because it was "socked in". I would HIGHLY recommend the tubing. I haven't had that much fun in years. Fun for all ages because they have a tow rope that pulls you back to the top of the hill. No Climbing!! It was a great time!

The Highlands turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. The one-bedroom unit was dark and we were subjected to cigarette smoke filtering in from below day and night - tough for non-smokers. The kitchen was adequate and clean, but the stove needed replacing. We had to get used to the living room floor, which seemed to slope downward starting in the hall! The bathroom was huge! We spent a great deal of time in the unit, as we experienced seven days of nonstop rain, fog, and cold! We couldn't even see the Blue Ridge Parkway, as visibility was so limited. The staff was great, very helpful and in the midst of redecorating, so the lounge area was used for storing old sofas and was not available for guests during our visit. The landscaping was lovely and resort location was convenient to Blue Ridge towns, such as Valle Crucis and Boone. We loved visiting craft galleries, artists and the Mast General Store. Resort activities were offered, but only the orientation actually was held, due to lack of sign-up by guests.

Wonderful views with a rustic mountain feel and an indoor pool. We stayed in a clean and spacious two-bedroom unit with two bathrooms and a loft area. The unit had a full kitchen, two TVs, and a large whirpool.
