Heidelberg is very expensive and fills up fast in the summer. I rented an apartment for several months in the Altstadt. I used it as a base and travelled from there. It cost about $500.00 per month. There are plenty of hotels, and a couple of Hostels. Expect to exceed $75.00 per night for a hotel. Heidelberg is great for day trips though. You can take the train in, catch a bus to downtown, walk around, then take a night train out.
