Crocodylus Village

The rainforests and beaches around Cairns do not even come close to being as exotic and wild as those around Cape Trib. When you ride the car ferry across the Daintree River, you feel like you are entering another world - the road becomes narrower, the forest more dense, and the people more sparse.

We stayed at Crocodylus Village. The place feels like you are camping in wild rain forest (you stay in canvas-walled cabins that are scattered through the forest), except that there's a friendly bar and restaurant. We did an overnight kayak trip, run by Crocodylus staff, to Snapper Island. The trip was amazing. My family (including children ages 12 and 16) shared the island for two days with just the other 7 people in our group. Cape Trib was the highlight of our trip to Australia, and Crocodylus and Snapper Island were the highlights of Cape Trib.

Another highlight in the area was a snorkel trip to the reef off of Cape Trib. We went with Rum Runners. They take a maximum of 40 people, much nicer than the 200-person boat we went with down at Townsville. The reef off of Cape Trib was alive and vibrant. Just amazing.

If you want t-shirt shops and crowded bars, stay in Cairns or Port Douglas. If you want a unique rainforest experience, head to Cape Trib.

Crocodylus

This is a YHA hostel, but it's not like any hostel I've stayed in before. Crocodylus offers a rare opportunity to stay in an idyllic cabin nestled beneath the canopy of the Cape Tribulation rainforest. What could be more relaxing in the searing heat of a Queensland summer than a few days in the shade. Spend days and evenings walking through the forest spotting the wildlife, which ranges from funnelweb spiders to bandicoots, feral pigs to cassowaries. Drift off to sleep listening to the sound of the wind through the trees and the nocturnal creatures scurring through the undergrowth. There is a restaurant on site, a small shop, a swimming pool, internet access, lots of guided tours and buses to take you to the nearby beach or environmental centre. Jungle tours offer packages that pick you up from your hostel in Cairns or Port Douglas and drop you back there after your stay.
