As we disembarked from KD river cruise at Obwersel, Germany, we were met by an enthusiastic young man who zipped up the steep mountainside to Zum Kronprinzen a family-run inn. With the steep mountainside drops and the narrow road, we were a little worried, but I got the impression that the driver could make this run with his eyes closed. And, upon arrive, I found out that this was no ordinary chauffeur/bell hop, however, but Markus Oppermann, the chef and owner of the inn--and host of the popular Dueling Chefs TV show.
Up the steep staircase, Room 10 was stylishly modern with an artistic bas relief of a Cana Lily on the wall. I didn't expect something so posh at a country in. The pillow was artistically plumped into a triangle and fresh fruit, bottled water and chocolate night time treat greeted me—just as in a major resort. The bathroom was a bit tiny, but it wasn’t a problem.
As a photographer, I always go to the window first to look at my view and I saw that I overlooked one of the most authentic of all German institutions—the Bier Garten, quiet now because it was a brisk April day. The chairs were tipped up against the wooden tables awaiting the summer guests who will sit here amid the shade of this pleasant countryside and soak up the ambiance. I make a mental note to come back here during beer festival time.
At this inn, surrounded by homes and with a spectacular with of the wooded countryside, you really feel as if you can relax. In additon to the common rooms in the inn and the bier garten, there's a delightful playground and plenty of room in the back yard to just lounge away as you soak up the great German sunshine.
And, since Markus is an accomplished chef, guests have the special enjoyment of anticipating sampling the his culinary creations (see separate journal entry.) This inn is just another example of how diverse Germany really is. From 5-star accommodations in Berlin to a quaint country in, there are many accommodations offerings. And, if you think that Germany is all suds and kraut, you haven't been there lately. This inn, whether it's the modern decor or its cuisine, offers style and class along with old-fashioned charm. The birds were twittering as I arrived and I can still hear them outside my window. Apparently they like it here as much as I do.
