Best Things About the Resort:
Very nice units.

Resort Experience:
There is construction going on, but does not interfere with your stay. Grounds are very nice and unit size is good. They have three pools here. Two indoor and one outdoor, all at different temperatures. Eighteen-hole mini-golf a hit with any kid. Wonder what this place looks like in the winter . . .

Only thing missing from units is washer/dryer, but laudromat is available on site.

Very clean, accommodating, lots of activities for families.

Resort Experience:
Very nice/beautiful place. No fireplaces in the room, but very cozy. Our room had a deck and overlooked a creek. Nice area and easy to get around.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort was very accommodating when a change of plans made an upgrade to a larger unit a very good idea. (One of the few resorts which can accommodate such a request.) The staff was very friendly, and gave us things like extra dishwasher soap without question or charge. Other resorts do that, but somehow the staff at Oak & Spruce was just so very nice about everything.

Resort Experience:
The units are not large, but adequate, and nicely funished, but there were signs that some renovation was needed -- marks on the walls where the dining room chairs hit them, etc. However, the resort was undergoing construction while we were there (May 2000), and refurbishment may have been planned. The indoor pool was badly in need of repainting, and the whole pool area needed "sprucing" up (despite the resort's name). I've been to other resorts under construction, but in other cases, the construction didn't seem to interfere as much with the resort's amenities and programs.

Pensione Ottaviano

Vatican City has no tourist accommodations. The surrounding area of Rome has a few. Some places are really nice, but our budget didn't allow us to stay there.

We stayed at the Pensione Ottaviano about 10 blocks from Vatican City (Linea B:Ottaviano). For $15 a night in a dorm setting it was fine. No meals are served and they provide a lockbox for anything valuable. Although, why you wouldn't keep all your valuables in your moneybelt is beyond me.

Overall a nice place with travelers from all over so you will have a chance to experience some other cultures while being absorbed by Italian culture.

Another great hostel in Rome is the Beehive. It isn't near Vatican City, however. You can check out their accommodations at www.the-beehive.com.
