Shanti Lodge

The Shanti Lodge is known for the superb Taj Mahal view from its rooftop restaurant. It’s located 3 minutes on foot from the Taj Mahal complex’s east and south gates, this allows you to visit the complex early and avoid the day trip tourists who arrive around 9am.

The rooms are very simple but clean and cheap. We were in a triple room with view, private bathroom, hot water and television. It’s sensible to see the room before pay for it, not all rooms are nice. The triple room’s price was 500 rupees. For further information shantilodge2000@yahoo.co.in

The restaurant has good prices, even though it doesn’t have a wide variety of food, it’s good enough to have a good breakfast and a proper meal after a long day, and the most important doesn’t have hygiene issues. The hotel also has an Internet cafe in the first floor where you can download pictures and burn CDs, which is really useful after visit the city’s attractions.

The good thing about this hotel, besides the view, are its helpful staff and owner. When I was there I got ill, I had a fever and I needed to call the insurance company, the owner left me his personal mobile phone to make the call and wait for the insurance to call me back, because I couldn’t get up and use the reception phone.

The “Taj Ganj” area is not too attractive, but the closeness to the Taj Mahal and the prices have made it very popular among backpackers, so in general it has a good atmosphere and the people are very kind and helpful.

This hotel is a great place to stay. It's cheap - £1 for a double room with a bathroom - and comfortable. It doesn't have air-con, but it does have fans in the ceilings. The owner is helpful, friendly, and speaks English. The rooms vary in size and quality - ours was lovely but the one we saw next door wasn't as nice though the same price. Ask to see your room before you pay, and they'll show you a nice one!

The roof-top has a great view of the Taj Mahal, and you can get breakfast served to you on this roof terrace. I liked this hotel a lot.
