Nature's Way a Great and Safe Place to Stay

  • August 11, 2009

I would like to address several negative reviews, because I found my stay to be very enjoyable and eye-opening. Please keep in mind that you are in a different country and that you are visiting a different culture so you should not expect to have a room with plush pillows, room service, or air conditioning (like you would in the U.S.).

I found my stay here to be very welcoming. It is a family run and ecotourist (sustainable, and minimal environmental impact) motel. Chet, the owner, was a great resource about the politics, environment, and culture of Belize. The only thing is you must ask questions, don't expect him to pull you aside and talk your ear off, if you want peace and quite he'll oblige you. But, if you want to learn about Belize all you need to do is express some interest and ask him some questions.

The rooms were fairly large, clean, had a fan, and the beds were twin-sized (like in college dorms). Several of the rooms had a beautiful view of the Caribbean, and if you did not have a view from your room all you needed to do was walk outside of the motel to have one.

Breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, and juice was prepared for us--very filling. There is also a computer you can ask to use, if you would like to check your emails.

Nature's Way was a paradise in Punta Gorda and a safe place to stay.

Nature's Way is a great place to get the feel of Punta Gorda. Nature's Way gives off a very homey and comfortable feeling, and the food cannot be topped. The owners are extremely helpful, caring, and friendly. Also, the view of the Caribbean sea is gorgeous. If you are looking for a five-star hotel, it may not be your spot, but if you are looking for luxury, Belize shouldn't be your spot anyway.

Nature’s Way Guesthouse – Punta Gorda

Nature’s Way Guesthouse – Punta Gorda

Our Room:
We had room number 3. It was large and clean with a partial ocean view. After peeking around, I think that room number 1 would have the best view. There was a fan in the room and towels were provided.

Private or Shared Bath?
Shared bath – could be cleaner.

The Atmosphere:
The owner that showed us our room was not terribly friendly. She was not rude to us, but we didn’t feel super welcome. We also heard her yelling at her kids a lot, which was not terribly pleasant. There is a small outside deck, but it is cluttered and the kitchen blocks the view of the water. This is not a guesthouse that is fun to hang around at, but it is adequately clean and cheap, so it is an OK place to stay for one night, like we did.

Food and Other Amenities:
There is a kitchen, and it looked like guests could use it, but I was never told by the owner that I could use the kitchen. Rough Guides guidebook says that Nature’s Way has a "wholefood restaurant" and that they can arrange homestays and tours, but I was not told about any of these services, which I think is a little strange. I have also read in more than one location that Nature’s Way is the headquarters of the Toledo Ecotourism Association, but I did not find any signs or hear any mention of this, so I do not believe it to be true. If it is, they must not want much business to stay so silent about it.

Location:
Nature’s Way is in a great location on the far south end of town, so it is very quiet. It may be a long way to haul heavy luggage, but the trek was easy with light luggage.

Security:
I seemed pretty secure. All rooms are on second floor, which would deter most invaders.

Price:
US$15 per night, double occupancy.

Do you enjoy camping? If so, you will probably like Nature''s Way "Hotel" because your room will be pretty much just as luxurious as a tent.

We booked our reservation through a travel agent who didn''t know much about Punta Gorda, so she probably wasn''t aware of the relatively primitive lodging she booked for us.

Nature''s Way does have running water, which means the toilet flushes and you can take a shower, but the bathroom is shared with all hotel guests and the shower barely qualifies because we could only get a trickle of water to come out.

You can have breakfast at Nature''s Way, and it is decent tasting food, just nothing fancy. The room rates are cheap, but you get what you pay for.

Clean rooms with shared cold showers. You won't object to the lack of hot water due to the heat in PG. This is a friendly gathering place for tourists and owner/manager Chet Schmitd is a font of information regarding how to access all the sites near PG as well as local lore. The guest house is clean but spartan but very, very cheap!(around $20US) You can also eat breakfast here.
