Grand Destinations - Mesquite

  • December 29, 2004
  • Rated 3 of 5 by GlendaS from Marana, Arizona
Best Things Nearby:
Zion National Park and Valley of Fire State Park were nearby.

Best Things About the Resort:
There was beautiful scenery and plenty of casinos nearby.

Resort Experience:
There was some road construction going on at the time of our visit, but it did not inhibit us from going anywhere. The city is growing rapidly, but expansions are on the outer limits of the resort.

The room left a little to be desired, but it was comfortable.

Best Things Nearby:
Mesquite, a village of 17,000, has a neat early history museum, some great casino dining and shows, and don't forget to get take out lunch sandwiches at the local food store a mile down main street.

Best Things About the Resort:
Convenient to casino for reasonable cost dining. Swimming pools, an exercise club available free. Modestly priced and functionally appointed suite with kitchen, dining and living area with pullout couch and reasonable bedroom with queen bed.

Resort Experience:
We like to hike, canoe, and sightsee, and this Mesquite location provided a reasonably priced home base. The resort itself was inauspicious but attractive and casino based; four swimming pools; had a go-cart track, attractive palm and desert plants landscaping. We spent our time touring, hiking Pine Valley and Duck Lake areas in the Dixie National Forest, toured the road through Zion and canoed in Lake Meade (too windy!). We got a kick out of the local historical museum...structure built in 1934 by, I think what was called the National Youth Corps ...a youth-oriented CCC. This is a community with great spirit that is emerging from its status as a "diamond in the rough." Take time to explore the golf courses as well as the community center and senior center if so inclined.

Best Things Nearby:
Proximity to the national parks.

Best Things About the Resort:
proximity to the national parks.

Resort Experience:
The resort was decent. It was right next to the highway, so you got that noise. It was, however, well maintained, and the units were adequately provisioned.

The lack of smiling, friendly faces was glaring at this resort. Check-in went ok, although we did have to change one of our units because it smelled of stale smoke even though we requested a non-smoking room. The service after that was horrible. It was difficult to even get a working TV remote. There were a couple of things that really annoyed me: One of the pools opened at 9am, but you couldn't swim until 11am! And the pool snack bar was only open on weekends! The laundry is located in the RV park, which was a bit of a hike when dragging a pillowcase full of clothes, but driving there required leaving the resort and coming in through another entrance; furthermore, once you get there, there is no change machine, so you have to go back to the resort desk, but they have no change, so you have to go over to the casino to get change. . . all that to get change for the washer and dryer! The staff around the resort was basically unfriendly. Of course, there were exceptions, namely the lifeguards at the pool and the maids. The Grand Destinations desk people could use some lessons in customer service.

If you plan to use this resort as a base of operations to visit the national parks, it's not a bad choice. Just don't set your expectations too high.

Grand Vacations Club at the Oasis

The one bedrooms were very nice -- two older hotel rooms remodeled into two rooms. Very clean and nice kitchen/bath. TVs in both rooms. Nice welcome basket with wine and food. Family of four would fit fine -- no privacy if you have four adults since one couple would sleep in living room on sofa bed, which was not too comfortable. Works for kids.

Best Things Nearby:
Fairly close to Zion and Bryce National Parks.

Best Things About the Resort:
Pools

Resort Experience:
It used to have lovely grounds with fish ponds, a go-track cart, and mini-golf. When we visited, however, the ponds had been dug up, the go carts were not running, the mini-golf was kaput. On top of that they were doing construction, which began outside our bedroom window every morning at 7am.
