Elkhorn at the Lodges

  • June 12, 2005
  • Rated 5 of 5 by moreilly from Calgary, Alberta
Best Things Nearby:
Stewart Creek, Silver Tip, and Canmore golf courses; Canmore Nordic Centre; Fortress, Norquay, and Lake Louise ski hills; hiking trails and the Three Sisters Mountain Range

Best Things About the Resort:
New units, full kitchen, bedroom for the kids, year-round warm outdoor pool, heated underground parking, outstanding mountain views, and a location away from busy streets

Resort Experience:
The Lodges have an alpine appearance that let you know you are in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains -- with all the luxuries. The master bedroom is spacious, with its own full bathroom. The second bedroom has two twin beds great for the kids or other guests. A full kitchen makes meal preparation a breeze. Views from the balcony showcase the Rocky Mountains, yet were private. Underground parking is heated and well maintained. Although we didn't use it, there is Internet access in the lobby for a fee. The outdoor pool was warm and comfortable and kept the kids entertained while we lounged in the hot tub after a long day's hike.

It is great getting an early start to the day's activities, whether it is skiing, hiking, mountain biking, golf, etc., rather than driving from Calgary and visiting only for the day. Canmore is what the "locals" say Banff was like 20 years ago – natural and not commercialized, an outdoor enthusiast's dream.

Best Things Nearby:
Great hiking, Banff, and Lake Louise.

Best Things About the Resort:
It is quiet and clean, has a friendly staff, and is fully equipped.

Resort Experience:
This has a very relaxing home-like setting, as it's very easy to feel right at home.

You can hear the train like in other resorts in this community, but it is very faint; you'd have to be a really light sleeper to have it annoy you.

Casa de Margarita

Casa de Margarita

For a start you do not have a great deal of choice in December if you want to stay in the town of Sóller - which I find far preferable to staying in the port. In fact if you go to Mallorca for the scenery as I did, I think it must be the place to stay in December as Deia would be pretty claustrophobic and the transport links from Sóller are probably the best for any of the mountain towns. The El Guia hotel described in Leesa's splendid journal is not open for accommodation in December.
However, the Casa de Margarita need not rely on the lack of choice if you are on your own. I had a double bed for myself for 20€ a night. There was a wash basin in the room and only about three rooms had to share the toilet and [separate] bathroom, which consisted of hot shower, wash basin and bidet.
The building is heated in the evenings and you can easily control your own room radiator. Moreover you can actually have breakfast served in your room for three euros a day - two large cups of coffee and plenty of delicious brown bread which I thought was homemade [wrongly, as it happens.] This is accompanied by a boiled egg or cheese portions and marmalade - English sense [orange.]
It is situated in the top[ of the town very near to the train and tram stops and is close to Pl. Constitutio, in or near which you will find yourself eating and where the most impressive buildings are found.
My reservation is that the room would be very cramped for two people unless they were both very short. The bed has a very firm end and I needed the full diagonal length [6 ft 2 in] I do not know if any of the rooms used for two people are bigger. They may well be - but I should want to ask before booking a double.
Since I was alone, however, I grade it below on the single basis, for which I really enjoyed my five nights.
