Kala Point and Resorts West Vacation Club at Kala

A little anxious after reading some of the negative reviews, we decided to do a timeshare trade over the Memorial Day weekend. I called the office a couple of weeks prior to our trip and spoke with Cindy, who was most accomodating. We were traveling with our two Airedale pups and had a 34-foot fifth wheel in tow for an extended Pacific Northwest vacation. Upon arrival, Cindy made special accommodations for parking of our trailer. We stayed in unit 34. You could catch a glimpse of the bay from the loft; the grounds were well-maintained. There were plenty of dogs, but all well behaved, including the owners.

The units do show their 20+ years but, hey, this is the Pacific Northwest, with plenty of weather, so the exterior doors catch plenty of dew throughout the year. I know one of the other contributors was miffed that the pots, pans, and glasses were not to their liking. Our stuff was fine, not new, but still in good shape. Many of the units are owned by folks who spend extended time there and I believe they have donated more utensils than the inventory sheet showed. Yes, there's a carpet stain here and there, but that has to be expected and there was no issue at the office when I mentioned it, just so we would not be held responsible.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive resort with programs and activities day and night, this is not the place. If you want to spend a quiet time in a beautiful area, this is for you.

You will need a vehicle, a good map, and plenty of time. I hopped on the Port Townsend/Keystone ferry just for a ride across the bay. Take a walk about Port Townsend and explore the surrounding area. Plenty to do, and by staying at Kala Point you will almost feel like a local as the gated community consists mostly of homes and apartments.

Best Things Nearby:
Port Townsend, golfing, water adventures, shopping, forts.

Best Things About the Resort:
Location on the Olympic Peninsula, large park-like grounds.

Resort Experience:
These units are in a large gated community. They are not fancy units, but their location is great (WorldMark at Discovery Bay has nicer units). They are just miles from Port Townsend, so are better located than Discovery Bay if you want to concentrate on Port Townsend.

They list an indoor/outdoor pool, but it is really an outdoor pool that has part of it covered so it is closed during the winter months. The hot tub is open year round and they have a small game room in the same building. These are split-level units with both bedrooms and baths downstairs. There are lofts in the units, some larger than others, and some offering a hide-a-bed. The other lofts are big enough to accommodate a large air bed. We were expecting a large loft with the hide-a-bed once and when we discovered that wasn't what we got, the resort management supplied us with a roll-away bed.

The grounds are nice and my boys and their friends enjoyed exploring them. There are BBQ pits and picnic tables throughout the grounds. The tennis courts are away from the units as is the waterfront. There really is not a beach as most people think of as beaches. Sitting on the dock on a sunny day is very relaxing. There is a large covered picnicking area near the water. If you would like to visit but can't book, call the units as they help owners rent their units and will be able to tell you what is available and the price.

Best Things Nearby:
Historic Port Townsend, with many buildings dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, is well worth exploring.

The ferry from Port Townsend to Keystone, Whidbey Island is a fun excursion. From Keystone, it''s a short, scenic drive to the Skagit Valley, where acres of gorgeous flowers bloom from late March and early-to-mid April.

Best Things About the Resort:
Fabulous views of Puget Sound, great beach with miles of sea meadow and wildflowers, nice exercise facility, and indoor/outdoor heated pool.

And if you love to travel with your dog, the staff at Kala Point are exceptionally welcoming. When we arrived (late and tired), the receptionist not only greeted us warmly, she also had dog biscuits for our pooches.

Resort Experience:
This resort is serene, scenic, wild, and beautiful, yet still provides every modern convenience and amenity. The full kitchen in our two-bedroom unit was well-equipped and well-lit. The open design of the kitchen/dining room/living room allows the cook direct access to the rest of the family and there are scenic views right from the kitchen. The spacious living room was elegantly furnished, had beautiful views through large picture windows and French doors, and the television/stereo was just great for quiet entertainment at the end of the day. The bedrooms were a little smaller than other places we have stayed in and the bedroom furniture was not as new and deluxe as the rest of the unit but everything was adequate and comfortable. Kala Point is close to quaint Port Townsend which has history, classical music, fine dining, art galleries, antiques, cool jazz, movies, and nightclubs.

River Rafting, Port Angeles Ferries, Olympic Game Farm, Olympic National Park

Best Things About the Resort:
The Olympic Peninsula is beautiful. It was very quiet and relaxing.

Resort Experience:
Kala Point is a private waterfront community, but don't expect to lay at the beach. It is chilly even in July. The neighborhood in mostly made up of private homes, but the time shre units are tucked away among the pine trees. Upon arrival, we got a swipe card to get through the from gate of the community. There is a sandy beach, but we were there over the 4th of July and it was not swimming weather. I wore a sweater most days. Port Townsend Bay is located northwest of Seattle on the Olympic Peninsula. The facilities include an indoor/outdoor pool, clubhouse and tennis courts. We did not use it at all during our stay. Our rustic townhouse-style unit had 2 small bedooms and 2 full baths downstairs. Upstairs was a full kitchen, a large private deck and a living room. Above that was a loft area with a pull out couch and a couple chairs. We did not use that space at all. This unit was sort of run-down especially the loft furnishings. This was not a "full service" resort. There were little to no organized activities and we did not see anyone the entire week. It seemed like we were the only ones there! It was very quiet and relaxing. Near the resort was an old style drive in movie theater. The grocery store and other amenities were up the road a bit closer into the town of Port Townsend. Overall, it seemed like an odd place for a timeshare unit. Most activities were a bit of a drive - like river rafting, Port Angeles, Olympic National Park.

I had planned for this hotel to be a bit of a treat before all the nights in a tent on our bike trip--in an historic chateau no less!--and for this, it was a bit of a disappointment. It was fine, the rooms were fine, but it wasn't quite as special as it sounded on paper.

For example, they advertise an 11th century dungeon, which had my sons excited. But, the dungeon has been converted into bedrooms (not ours--and they didn't advertise dungeon rooms, or I would have requested them), and therefore it was not available for viewing.

We also had dinner at the hotel, which was quite expensive (>$30 apiece?) and only okay--my husband's meal was not at all good. There is a swimming pool, though, which is nice after a hot day, and they don't require Speedo-type bathing suits, so the kids were pretty happy about that.
