The Marriott New World Hotel is located within about 10 minutes walk of some of Xi’an City’s major sites, such as the Bell and Drum Towers and the city wall. The hotel itself is fairly large: the lobby is expansive and, as I recall, there was a fair amount of marble around. We arrived at the hotel very late; our flight from Guilin was delayed for several hours and it was after midnight when we checked in. Our tour guide helped us through the formalities and (bless her heart) said we could start off at about 9 the next morning on our tour of the sights outside Xian.
Purple is the main color of the rooms here: the beds have vinyl headboards attached to the wall. Mine were showing their age, but the room was fairly clean. It was a rather large room for one person, containing two twin beds, a long, low dresser with TV (MSNBC and BBC news were the English stations) and a writing desk. There was a closet with a safe.
The bathroom was good sized, but the shower spray was not very strong. Minimal toiletries were provided and there was a hairdryer.
The hotel corridors were fairly dark and the door to the room seemed sort of flimsy to me. Maybe it was just that we got to the hotel late both nights that we spent in Xi’an, but I was a little uncomfortable walking from the elevator to my room in the evening.
A buffet breakfast of mostly western food was provided with the room. Nothing particularly remarkable about it, except it was there that I had an odd realization: although places in every restaurant (at least every Chinese restaurant) are set with chopsticks at lunch and dinner, the breakfast table had western cutlery.
The Marriot New World is an acceptable choice in Xi’an, but I don’t think I would stay there again.
