Duke of Windsor

There are over 80 bed and breakfast offerings in Cape May and choosing one can be a challenge. My husband and I were married at the Duke of Windsor in January, 2003 and, thus, are partial to it for our stays in Cape May. We had the fortune to meet with the Innkeeper, Patricia, a number of times prior to the wedding and in every instance she and her staff have been a joy to work with. For our wedding, we rented all 10 rooms in the inn for our family and friends. Each room is authentically furnished with period antiques and offers a private bathroom, which is a nice find in Cape May. The public rooms include a roomy parlor with fireplace, a reading nook in the tower alcove, a pair of dining rooms, and a comfy front porch. Sadly, it was a bit too cold to use the porch in January!

The Duke of Windsor (see website here is located on Washington Street, a lovely tree-lined street in the heart of Cape May. Just a short walk down the same street is the Washington Street Mall, a pedestrian mall full of shops and restaurants. The inn itself is a restored Queen Anne home, with accommodation on the second and third floors. There are 4 types of rooms: the tower rooms, the queen rooms, queen deluxe rooms, and the suite. The tower rooms are the smallest and are located in the tower of the home with full sized beds. The queen and queen deluxe rooms feature queen sized beds. The deluxe rooms also have a daybed. The suite has a separate sitting room. Only 2 rooms have televisions, which I think is grand! As the rooms are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, those with problems climbing stairs may want to request a room on the 2nd (rather than the 3rd) floor.

High tea is served at the Duke of Windsor on Friday and Saturday afternoons. In warm weather, you can enjoy the tea on the porch. In winter, the fireplace is turned on and the parlor made a cozy retreat from the elements. Breakfast is served in the dining rooms and is a gourmet affair, with dishes being chosen from the Inn's recipes. Guests share tables together and it's a nice way to meet your fellow travelers. A refrigerator is made available on the ground floor for all guests and glassware is laid out, should you like to enjoy a glass of wine as you settle in for the evening. I really cannot say enough nice about the Duke of Windsor and its owner and staff. We've traveled all over the world and not found a better place to lay our head. They really go out of their way to make you feel at home! Another plus I should mention is that the Duke of Windsor offers parking, a highly prized item in Cape May. :-)
