McKinley Chalet Resorts

McKinley Chalet Resorts

The McKinley Chalet Resort, located at Denali National Park was not only gorgeous, but the best place we stayed in Alaska. Too bad, because with scenery like Denali, who needs a great-looking hotel?

I am only sorry that our visit was so short, because I loved the hotel, the rooms, the lobby, and the view. However, based on reviews I've read elsewhere it seems that the resort has several sprawling buildings of varying quality. We stayed in the newest one that was recently renovated (in case you're booking a room, be sure to ask).

The hotel is light, airy, and designed to take full advantage of its environment. The lobby features floor-to-ceiling glass windows with a 34-foot atrium and natural wood decor. The rooms are tastefully done in the full spectrum of rich browns from pale ivory to rich dark leather shades and feature a lot of different textures.

Our room had two comfortable queen beds with leather headboards and a thin plasma widescreen TV. Normally, I'm not a big fan of TVs on vacation but after two weeks of being out of touch it was such a luxury! The bathroom had two sinks, bright lighting and a very nice shower-tub. Toiletries were Thymes, a quality brand usually found in more expensive bath boutiques. Towels were thick and luxurious.

The second floor lobby had a balcony that overlooked the main lobby. And if you worried that all this fresh air was depleting your brain cells, well, you could play chess at the chess boards on the second floor.

We really enjoyed our stay here and from what we heard, this was one of the best places there. I would happily go again - and stay longer next time.

McKinley Chalets

The McKinley Chalets...you should be warned ahead of time that Alaska''s accommodations are not to be compared to other places. Reasonably comfortable-think of a family owned get away in North Carolina with a few trimmings. Think of your upgraded cabin - genteel shabby. The walls are thin (we easily heard our neighbors) but, the beds are comfortable. Our room came with two full sized beds, a sitting area, a welcome coffee maker, an adequate bathroom. There were no frills like hair dryers. Don’t get your hopes up and you won’t be disappointed.

Think that by the time you arrive you don’t even care anymore because you are focused on the next day. Our cabin faced a dried riverbed. We hiked down to the river and picked a stone to add to someone’s started monument. Shuttles regularly run to the main lodge or you can hike uphill. On our first night we headed for the lodge but never made it. We were hungry and tired. About half way up we ran into the Alaska Or Bust Theatre and never got further.

The main lodge area has several buildings housing two restaurants and a gift shop. It also is the staging area for all tours and bus shuttles to Denali Village. The next day we decided to walk to the small shopping area after dinner at the chalet café. There were a few gift shops, the pizza parlor and the ice cream shop also seemed to be having a good night. The road is a little steep, so those with physical considerations should grab a shuttle. The sun set and we hiked back in the dark.

McKinley Village Lodge

The Village is a collection of buildings, many recently constructed, that look like they came straight out a Lincoln Log set. The complex is set next to a beautiful mountain stream which, with the blazing yellow fall foliage, provided a scenic delight at our doorstep. The reception lobby is relatively small as is the bar next to it. The bar offers a lunch menu with standard items such as hamburgers as well as the everpresent fresh Alaskan salmon in a sturdy western decor. With a nice fire burning in the fireplace, we found it a nice place to eat, warm up and plan our afternoon. Prices were on the high side, but this is common to all of the concessions in the area that we visited. The food was average.
Further down the hall is the restaurant. We did not eat in this facility, but it appeared to be functionally pleasant. Since it shares a kitchen with the bar, we decided to have our dinners off the property to try something new.
The rooms and amenities are on the basic side. The experience of getting here and enjoying the outdoors outweighs the few hours spent in the hotel room. The rooms compare more closely with an upscale Motel 6 than a downscale Crowne Plaza despite the steep prices. The staff was friendly and helpful despite the rapidly approaching closing for the season. Adjacent to the Village is the Denali Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the region. It offers frequent lectures, socials and other functions that are enjoyable and informative. It also operates an elder hostel. You can find out more about it at http://www.denali.org/ or phone 907.683.2597.
