On both of my visits I chose self-catering. The rooms were purposefully built and serviced, they are like everything else on the Greek islands - sparse, no TV, for example, and no air conditioning. Many package tours will include your accommodation at reduced cost, you should however when booking a package choose your destination resort carefully, to best suit your needs.
