[This was as of 10/2002] We did get to Bath and checked into the very charming Holly Villa B&B at 14 Pulteney Gardens, BA2 4HG, (01225) 310331. It was just across the North Parade Bridge and then a three block walk. It cost £55 = $91/night. When seeking out a B&B we look for plumbing that works, beds that are comfortable, food that is fresh and flavorful, and service that is, heartfelt. The Holly Villa featured immaculate, comfortable rooms, huge wonderful “English” breakfasts with loads of tasty sliced, fresh fruit and yogurt. Host and hostess, Jill and Keith McGarrigle were very knowledgeable possessing a terrific sense of humor. They were most helpful to us throughout our four day stay including helping us rent a car. I hadn’t researched it.
English homes never were designed with air-conditioning or power showers in mind. This one and the others we stayed in were similar.
The small garden at Holly Villa is a gem, with a beautiful display of flowers. Primroses were in bloom under the magnificent Holly tree from which the house takes its name, and snowdrops were peeping out, even on the bleak days. Flowers in bloom included roses, impatiens and begonias. The grounds had two trellises we walked through to get to the entrance to the B&B. Both the American and the Union Jack flags hung outside. They have a web site http://www.bath.org/hotel/holly.htm isn’t their own, but gives a good idea of the place.
