Dirty and Noisy Avoid at All Costs

Dirty and Noisy Avoid at All Costs

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Dirty stained carpets and chairs, water damages ceiling and stained walls, wallpaper peeling off the walls. A superior room that was only just big enough to swing a cat. The bathroom should be condemned, cracked tiles, missing grout and stained all over. The worst thing of all is the noise till 3am from the disco next door and drunken morons shouting in the street.

To Be Avoided

On no account stay at this establishment - it is grubby, poorly maintained, and scandalously expensive. We paid £95 - ninety-five pounds - for a pokey double room containing cheap furniture and a creaking bed, above which wallpaper was detaching itself from the wall. The fitted carpets in the bathroom did not fit and like the bath mat and towels showed their frayed edges. A particularly fetching detail was the little notice encouraging guests to environmental friendliness: this was clumsily bluetacked to the bathroom tiles where sellotape had previously failed to do the job. Dust was ingrained on the skirting boards. The chipboard wardrobe lacked coat hangers. Breakfast was medicocre, and we were unable to find cereal bowls which were not chipped, like our coffee cups. Be warned!

It''s a nice family-run hotel only 2 minutes away from the major sights - the pump room, the roman baths, and so on. It also has a pub on the premises - and a delicious restaurant.

George's Hotel

A charming hotel, The George's Hotel is in a 1743 Grade 1 listed building located about 2 blocks from the train station. Rooms are modest, but clean...and the pigeons on the windowsill are complimentary. The manager''s little daughter, Michelle, was such a cutie that we wanted to stay longer.

No lift (elevator), but ground floor rooms can be requested. Dining room on site, with small bar with dining area off of lobby.

At 65 GBP per night, which was about $95 USD when we traveled, we thought the accomodations were a bargain. The price was per night (not per person) and included full English breakfast of sausages, bacon, toast, eggs cooked to order, mushrooms, broiled tomato, jellies and jams, and hot tea or coffee.
