Paniolo Greens

We had a two bedroom, bi-level condo timeshare unit. The bedrooms and bathrooms were upstairs with the kitchen and living areas on the main level. The washer dryer combo was also located on the second floor in the hallway between the bedrooms. We thoroughly enjoyed our fairway facing lanai each morning and in the early evening. On many mornings we were awaken by the wild turkeys gobbling shortly after sunrise.

Inside our condo, it appeared that the furnishings had been recently updated...maybe two or three years ago. The kitchen was well equipped and very bright. The bathrooms, however, needed some detailed cleaning as both showers had some mold on the caulking. The exterior of the buildings appear to need some TLC (and paint). The grounds, however, were well landscaped and groomed.

The swimming pool is nice, nothing special...and there is a six or eight person hot tub there as well. The speakers for the music, however, have been blown making the quality of the "music" little more that raspy, muffled sounds. It actually became grating on your nerves after a while because it sounded so bad. They really need to replace the speakers!

Shell Vacation Clubs has an activities desk on site. They also have a good deal if you take their sales tour. I would highly recommend it, especially if you are planning to do any activities or tours on The Big Island. There is a cash offer plus you receive a discount card that really makes the tours affordable. On our second day here we did the Island Hoppers Circle Island (air) Tour. Regular price is right at $300 per person. We did it for $167 each...a saving of $266. We could not have afforded it at $600 total!

The only real irritant was the rude 8:10am phone call from their sales staff reminding us of their morning orientation briefing at 10. This was on Sunday morning, after arriving very late and being exhausted from the long travel day.

There are plenty of on-site activities if you are so inclined. Be aware, however, that all of the lessons and crafts are for an additional fee. I think the only thing we saw that was for free was the orientation briefing and welcome reception on Monday evening.

Many may tell you that this resort is too far out of the way from Kona proper. That is true if most of what you want to do is in Kailua-Kona or along the south shore area. We enjoy the snorkeling and beaches in more remote locations heading north so for us this was a good location. It is approximately 45 minutes from Kailua-Kona and 20 minutes from Waimea (Parker Ranch country). There are some nice shops and restaurants in Waikoloa where the Hilton and Marriott are, which is about 15 minutes from Paniolo Greens.

Best Things Nearby:
Several resorts and hotels are nearby - also a small shopping center with a couple of restaurants - the real town is about 30 minutes down the highway

Best Things About the Resort:
The unit we were in, a 2 bedroom, was excellent for us and the couple who were with us. We had laundry facilities, large enough bedrooms, a balcony, good sized full kitchen, and good sized living area. The pool at the resort was convenient, as was the hot tub.

Resort Experience:
We enjoyed our week at Paniolo Greens very much. The staff was helpful and we enjoyed a couple of the activities there, such as a tai chi and exercise lesson. This resort would not be good, however, for anyone wanting a lot of night life, as the town is about 30 minutes down the highway, and therefore not as convenient. We toured part of the island each day, five days in a rented car, and two days on a rented Harley motorcycle, and enjoyed having the comfortable condo to return to each evening.

Best Things Nearby:
It is about a 10 minute drive to several of the northwest beaches. Just down the road is a mall with grocery, nightclub, shopping, and restaurants.

Best Things About the Resort:
The resort offers an introduction to BI by providing access to several vendors on site. You can get additional discounts by completing a tour of timeshare, but it is not required to schedule activities. Since we were exploring most of the island, this location was very good for us.

Resort Experience:
Located on the Northeast part of the Big Island. It is about 30 minutes to Kona and 90 minutes to Hilo. Good central location for the island if you plan activities in Kona and Hilo. The 2 bedroom - 2 bathroom unit gave us more than enough room. We had 1 king, 1 queen bed, and a sleeper sofa. The 1st floor units are one level, but the 2nd floor units are two levels. The steps are reasonable for even the out of shape. The room/accommodations were very nice and clean. The decor had a tropical- Hawaiian flare. We had a beautiful view of the golf course right from our patio. The rolling greens with the beautiful mountain as a back drop. We had daily visits from the local wild life including the turkeys on Thanksgiving Day. The full kitchen with dishwasher and disposal was quite a treat. We were able to cook a complete meal daily with ease. It had a full size stack washer/dryer which is definitely a benefit when you are trying to pack lighter. If you stay on the first level, you can hear everything from above so keep this in mind when you are asked level one or two. The pool was small, but it was clean and had a nice patio area surrounding with restrooms close by. We didn't get to use the pool even though most of the time it didn't look crowded. I figure most visitors were out enjoying the island. To my son's disappointment there was no gameroom. The grounds were well kept with a variety of plants and trees. The check-in area was down the road at the mall, but they were in the process of building a new check-in lobby.

Best Things Nearby:
Beaches were a short drive away. A small shopping area has a grocery store and restaurants.

Best Things About the Resort:
The staff was friendly and helpful. It was comfortable to stay in the condo, with a stocked kitchen and the BBQs close by. But the emergency flashlight provided will come in handy, as the BBQ areas were not lit at night. It was easy to get a great nights sleep, as there were two bedrooms, with a king sized bed in one, and the other a double bed. If needed there was also a sofa bed available. We liked how our room opened out to the golf green. It was also great to eat breakfast on our patio , with the option of going out for a stroll, as we were on the ground level. The relaxed pace of the area is great for a quiet stay. After being out all day it was great to have the option of watching a bit of TV to relax. There were three TV's in our unit and a VCR in the living room. It was great to have the pool towels in the room, but it would have been nicer to be able to trade them in daily for clean ones. It was nice to have a large hot tub to relax in nightly, and visit with the other guests. In the morning there were classes available to learn different skills. I particularly enjoyed the guest speaker from the coffee plantation. He provided pictures of the process and samples of products. This saved a trip to the plantation.

Resort Experience:
After picking up your rental vehicle, I highly recommend a trip to Costco to pick up your groceries for the stay. What you can't find there or if the quantities are just too big, you can get at the local grocery store. This shopping mall also is where the office is for checking in. It was a great place to take the family. There was plenty of space to unwind after a day at the beach, or a busy day of sight seeing. With so many sights, we will return to see more of what nature and their culture has. We all enjoyed our snorkel trip to the Captain Cook Monument, the Place of Refuge and the Keahou Beach. We enjoyed many beaches, shopping in the Kona area, a trip to the Thurston Lava Tubes, and the Kahua Ranch.

Best Things Nearby:
There was a golf course on-site together with a supermarket, bank, petrol station, and all necessary local services. Wonderful secluded sandy bays were within twenty minjutes drive, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.

Best Things About the Resort:
The accommodation was very spacious and to a good standard, the staff were most helpful and efficient. The unit was well maintained.

Resort Experience:
Overall we had an excellent holiday, all that we had dreamed off. The weather was perfect and there were plenty of places to visit. Hawaii is a place of paradise and our timeshare unit made an ideal base for sightseeing and for simply lazing on the sands. The scenery is stunning with wide green fertile land contrasting with wild volcanic lava fields. We spent most of our time out, so did not make much use of the on-site activities.
