South Seas-Mediocre

Best thing they do at South Seas is marketing. We found the beds hard and the room tired, even though a lot of the resort was redone after the hurricane. Due to tile floors, noise is trans mitted eaily. Restauants are few and not very good. everything is over priced and under sized. At the time of our stay there was only one evening restaurant open other than a barbeque. Vending machines did not work and our room key deprogrammed twice.
The pools and beaches are very nice.
If you go be sure you have a car so that you can visit the rest of the Island and try the other restaurants.

Resort Experience:
This is the one place we will return to over and over. The resort has something for everyone - pools and play for children and adults as well as complete quiet and solitude as desired - not to mention a number of wonderful restaurants.

We stayed in one of the Bayside Villas, which is at the near end of the resort by the first Marina. It was a wonderful room, complete with master bedroom offering a safe and strangely, a microwave, plus a full kitchen (sparkling white!) and dining table. There were also two bathrooms equipped with shampoo, conditioner and lotion, and a Murphy bed in the living room! It was more than big enough for two people, and could have easily accommodated four adults, or a family. The rugs were a tad outdated (browns) but the rest of the decor was very fun and island-themed. Our favorite thing was the fantastic screened porch where we sat and had breakfast every morning while watching snowy egrets and pelicans fly over the marina. NOTE: The nightly rate is normally $240.00, but we received a Florida resident rate of $149.

Accomodations at the South Seas Resort were somewhat disappointing. Though the room was spacious, it intirely lacked in originality or refinement. A huge television dominated the room. Regular fare for our room was posted at $450/night. For that price, bath robes and sheets of Egyptian cotton are in order. It was more akin to a Hilton than the posh luxury commensurate with the outstanding natural environment, landscape, and price.

The staff was efficient, but unfriendly...never offering a timely "thank you," step out of thier way, or smile. Additionally, the architecture seemed to have been uprooted from any gated community neighborhood in America.

On the positive, all of the facilities one could dream of are available. Pools, beach, spa pampering, trails, marina, and wildlife are there for your pleasure.

South Seas Plantation

South Seas Plantation Resort has everything you could ask for from an island vacation. It''s elegant, yet informal and friendly. The beaches are glorious and the grounds are beautiful--we hardly saw even a faded flower blossom.

South Seas covers more than 300 acres on the north end of Captiva Island. There are lots of things to do within the resort grounds: There are many bars and restaurants, a beautiful 9-hole golf course which is right next to the Gulf of Mexico, bicycle and watercraft rentals of all kinds. You can rent a power boat, canoe or kayak, take a day cruise, or learn to sail.

Accomodations at South Seas range from hotel rooms to rental condos and houses. We stayed in the Harborview Rooms, which is a hotel-type building overlooking the marina. Our hotel room was spacious, with two queen-sized beds and an enormous bathroom/dressing room. Sliding glass doors led to a private balcony. We enjoyed having breakfast overlooking the marina.

I can only think of one negative thing to point out about South Seas--there seem to be a few needless rules. One afternoon we were caught in a sudden downpour and went running for cover in the nearest restaurant, Cap''n Al''s. We ordered a couple of drinks to pass the time until the rain stopped, and asked to sit at a table. At 2:30 in the afternoon the restaurant was almost deserted, but we were told we had to sit at the bar unless we ordered food.

Overall, though, we had a wonderful stay enjoying the great beaches and the friendly staff. I can''t imagine anyone being dissatisfied with South Seas Resort.
